Chapter 1 Introduction引言
本章包括四部分组成,其中包括一般描述的论文,论文的可行性,研究问题和论文的整体结构。This chapter consists of four parts, which include general description of the thesis,feasibility of the thesis, research questions and the overall structure of the thesis.
1.1 General Description of the Thesis论文的总体描述
This thesis aims to make a contrastive study of the Chinese and American leaders’addresses from the perspectives of the choice of theme and choice of Thematic Progressionpatterns, which are based on Halliday’s Theme-Rheme theory (Halliday, 2004) and Danes’s(Danes: 1974) and Huang Yan’s (Huang Yan, 1985) Thematic Progression theory. The purposeof the study is to find out the similarities and differences in the choice of theme and the choiceof Thematic Progression Patterns in the two types of the discourses and then analyze thecharacteristics of how the old and new information flow in the two discourses respectively. Atlast, the underlying factors that caused such phenomena will be explored.Fries (1983) points out that there are some inner relationships between thematicprogression and genres. The address, which is seen as the combination of spoken and writtenlanguage, has the features of both spoken language and the written language. So it is adoptedas the corpus. In addition, although there have been many researches about the officialaddresses, some of them took single text as the discourse,https://www.51lunwen.org/languagethesis/ such as the analysis of Obama’sinaugural speech and most of them took the discourses in single language, especially inEnglish. What is more, these researches are mainly based on the Thematic Progression theory.Few researches concentrate on the Chinese leaders’ addresses, to say nothing of thecontrastive analysis between the Chinese and American leaders’ addresses. Therefore, as aspecial genre, the Chinese leaders’ and American leaders’ official addresses are chosen as thediscourses of the study and the relevant contrastive study is made. Based on the previousstudies of the Thematic Progression patterns, five types of TP patterns are adopted here as thetool of the analysis, namely Constant Theme Pattern, Constant Rheme Pattern, The SimpleLinear Pattern, The Alternative Pattern and Irregular Pattern.
1.2 Feasibility of the Study研究的灵活性
Before a specific contrastive study of different languages, first and foremost, we shouldascertain its feasibility (James, C. 1980:169). A contrastive study without a common criterionwould be meaningless (Xu Yulong, 2001:25). So it is necessary to make our presentcontrastive study feasible.First, it is necessary to make sure whether Halliday’s Systematic Functional Grammar isalso available in Chinese since it is practicable in English.Many linguists have made researches about the application of SFG in Chinese. Forexample, Zhang Jin & Zhang Keding (1998) figure out that the elements that can function astheme in English and Chinese are basically same. But due to the complexity of Chinese, thereare still some differences in form and number: in Chinese, there are more components that canfunction as theme. This is in accordance with Chen Zhi’an and Kuang Lan’s (2002) view, whoargue that Chinese is so flexible that we have more freedom in selecting what constituents canfunction as the theme.
