Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 The Purpose and Significance of the Study

The development of human civilization is greatly hastened with the use oflanguage. The study on language phenomenon is in large part merely the study ofhumanity by linguists. As such, it has aroused the specialists’ interest and attentionranging from biology, communication, Education, psychology and rhetoric to othervarious academic fields. Specialists have dealt with languages from discrepantperspectives and have given subsequent researchers an insight into the linguisticitems.Over centuries, the phenomenon of fossilization in the second language learninghad attracted a great many linguistists' attention since it was firstly proposed bySelinker in 1972. During the process of researching, many explorers start to researchthe stages of first language acquisition, namely, the mother language acquisition,which is seemingly the foundation of the second language acquisition (SLA).Language acquisition, in fact, is the individual's complex linguistic advance. Both thefirst language acquisition and the SLA courses are unstable, multi-aspects affected,tough and flexible. Thus, the language acquisition process could be interfered,amended, and improved. This thesis aims at exploring the influence of the auditoryinput and visual input on the English language fossilization and trying some strategiesand suggestions in terms of alleviating the fossilization.
When we come to the interlanguage, a bridge between the two language systemsand is regularly presented by the learner's utterances, discourses and so forth, it isunavoidable to mention the fossilization. Interlanguage grammar is being formedduring the process of SLA; it is intimately associated with the formation ofinterlanguage cognitive system. In order to prevent learners from ceasing thedevelopment of language acquisition competence, the de-fossilization measures inprocedures of second language's internalization have become a top priority. Thepenetration of the second language information into an individual's cognitive system as well as the creation of interlanguage grammar, are proved to be significantinfluencing factors of fossilization.As is well known language information, to some extent, is a kind of substance andit has to exist within substances. Every human has a sound production system that ismade up of numerous disparate voice organs. All these organs work together to makecontributions to sound output. Language acquisition is a physiological process also apsychological process, which lies on individual's brain nerve network. Since thelanguage phenomenon is an external substance, learners should have a goodunderstanding of it based on the research achievements of brain nerve network,especially the connections among innumerable neurons. The language cognitivesystem is apparently separated but actually connected with the brain nerve network.Through functional resonance imaging (fMRI), researchers can observe brain activitydirectly and lively.
