Chapter Four Data Analysis and Discussion

4.1 Introduction of the Chapter
It is true that almost all editorial authors aim to express their own viewpoints andtry to persuade the readers to agree with them. In this thesis, the writer tries to analyzeand discuss the appraisal resources distributed respectively in the 10 political editorialdiscourses. The data for the study covers 5 editorials from Washington Post and 5comments from the China Daily, all of which are collected from international politicalissues. In this part, we will analyze the attitudinal resources distributed in the 10 EPEDsuccessively. Based on the data analysis, the distributive features of attitudinalresources in the 10 EPED will be discovered.First of all, the distribution of attitudinal evaluation resources in Englisheditorials or comments will be emphasized by analyzing the attitudinal resourcesamong the ten samples. And afterwards, we will attempt to explore how these wordscontribute to the convey of editorialists’’ attitudes or viewpoints and to maintain thealignment between writers and readers by analyzing some instances. Here is a table toshow the percentage of the distribution of attitudinal meanings in the ten EPED.

Conclusion

In this part, the author will concentrate on making a brief summary of the wholepassage.In chapter one, the author provides a brief introduction to the thesis. Firstly, theresearch background was focused, and then the appraisal theory was introduced.What’s more, the data and methodology, objectives and significances, and theorganization of the thesis were illustrated during chapter one. On the basis of chapterone, a general understanding of the whole thesis is presented.During the second chapter, the author concentrates on the literature review whichcan be divided into three parts: the previous studies on news discourse, editorials aswell as the appraisal theory. Based on chapter two, we can summarize that eventhough the study of English editorials have been explored by different scholars abroadand at home, few scholars concentrate on the construction of interaction from theangle of appraisal theory.In chapter 3, the theoretical framework of the thesis which consists two parts isintroduced in detail. On the one hand, the author describes the origin of the appraisaltheory. On the other hand, the three sub-systems of appraisal theory is analyzedspecifically.
