摘要:本文结合原著中的众多例子介绍了会影响翻译策略的四个方面,即作者中心论、读者中心论、译文的可读性与译文的可接受性。两个译本在翻译策略的侧重上是不同的。
Chapter 2 TheoreticalAnalysis
2.1 German Functionalist School
Functionalist approach to translation is another influential trend in moderntranslation studies. They were developed in Germany in the late 1970s. Prominent figuresof the school: Katharina Reiss, Justa Holz-Manttari, Hans J. Vermeer and ChristianeNord. Since the prevalent equivalence-based linguistic translation theorists held the viewthat any target text that was not equivalent (“as far as possible”) to the correspondingsource text was a non-translation, the German Functionalists became increasinglydissatisfied with the relationship between translation theory and practice and proposedtheir own functionalist approaches to translation. Here “functionalist” means “focusingon the function or functions of texts and translations”, and “functionalism” is a broadterm for various translation theories that approach translation in this way. (Nord, 1997:1As early as 1971 Katharina Reiss introduced a functional category into her“objective approach to translation criticism”. Her book Possibilities and Limits ofTranslation Criticism: Categories and Criteria for a Fair Evaluation of Translations(1971) may be regarded as the starting point for the scholarly analysis of translation inGermany.Taking equivalence as her basis, Reiss develops a mode of translation criticismbased on the functional relationship between source and target texts. According to Reiss, the ideal translation would be equivalence. However, she finds that there are twoexceptions from the general purpose of achieving equivalence: when the target text isintended to achieve a purpose or function other than that of the original, functionality (i.e.Adequacy to the intended function) takes precedence over equivalence. When the targettext addresses an audience different from the intended readership of the original, reader-centeredness takes precedence over equivalence.

2.2 Introduction of Skopos Theory
Skopos is the Greek word for “aim” or “purpose” and was introduced intotranslation theory in the 1970s by Hans J. Vermeer as a technical term for the purpose oftranslation and of the action of translating. There are three main rules which are skoposrule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.Skopos is a word from Greek which means “purpose” or “aim”. The top rule isskopos rule which is a translation action is determined by its skopos, which is regarded asthe final justifies the means by Reiss and Vermeer. (Reiss & Vermeer, 1984:101)Vermeer also emphasizes that the skopos rule is a general rule on many occasions, andthe translation methods and strategies are all determined by the purpose and the intendedfunctions of the target texts. The coherence rule refers to that the target text should be interpretable as coherentwith the receiver’s situation. In other words, the target should be translated in this waythat is coherent for the receivers of the target texts, given the backgrounds and knowledge. In terms of the coherence rule, the original text is not the most authority any more but justa part of the translation belief. It only offers some information for the translator whoneeds to pick out the meaningful information what he considers to be in the receiver’ssituation.
