2.2 Studies on Foreignization and Domestication abroad
In the west, the dispute between the foreignization and domestication (literal and freetranslation) has undergone several times in history and the different translation theorist orscholars who has given their p
Reference in the choice of translation strategy. The distinction between the literal and free translation goes back to Cicero (the firstcentury BCE) and St Jerome (late fourth century CE). Cicero is the first one to offer hisviewpoint in this aspect. In his article of De optimo genere oratorum (the best kind oforator), he outlined his approach to translation as follow:I did not translate them as an interpreter, but as an orator, keeping the same ideas and the forms, or as one might say,the figures‘ of thought, but in language which conforms to our usage. And in so doing, I did not hold it necessary torender word for word, but I preserved the general style and force of the language (Cicero 46 BCE/1960 CE: 364).According to Cicero, he disparages the word for word translation and seems to supportthe free translation, later this kind of views was advocated by Horace. He underlines thegoal of producing an aesthetically pleasing and creative text in target language in hisfamous passage from his Ars Poetica (arts of poetry). Both of them upheld the creativetranslation and encourage the translator sticks to translate sense for sense (free) instead ofword for word (literal).
