Chapter Four Multi-modal Analysis on the Construction ofChinese Cultural Image

4.1 Data Collection and Research Methods

This section consists of data collection,and research methods.During data collection,the author introduces criteria for data selection and data annotation.Meanwhile,it isnecessary to mention the process for the identification of multi-modal metaphors.

This research aims to answer three questions:

(1)What are the features and distribution of multi-modal metaphor types in FestiveChina?

(2)How these multi-modal metaphors construct Chinese cultural image?

(3)Why choose these multi-modal metaphors?What functions do these multi-modalmetaphors play in the construction of Chinese cultural image?

With these questions,the data is collected based on a specific purpose.Firstly,all themetaphors shown in the video will be annotated;Second,multi-modal metaphors containingthe positive meaning will be selected.For example:“Chinese nation”is conceptualized as“afamily”.This metaphor has the positive meaning in strengthening national unity,so it will beannotated in corpus.In Festive China,the videos contain the multi-modal metaphors for “national cultural image”,including two concepts,the source domain,and the target domain.

5.1 Major Findings of the study

This study adopted multi-modal metaphor theory to explore Chinese cultural imageconstructed by multi-modal metaphors in official media videos.With the focus on theanalysis of the representation of multi-modal metaphors and their meaning construction,themain research results mainly correspond to these three research questions.The main findingsof the study can be summarized as follows:

First,multi-modal metaphors in Festive China mainly involve three types of mappingrelationships:multi-modal mapping,cross-modal mapping,and mono-modal mapping,among which multi-modal mapping accounts for 75%at the most.The source domain andtarget domain are mostly represented in pictorial mode,verbal mode,and auditory mode.The use of different modes enhances the simplicity and vividness of metaphors,throughwhich Chinese cultural image is deeply impressed in the minds of the international public.Inan information age,multi-modal discourses are particularly important.Images,verballanguage,text,and audio work together to make the audience quickly understand theinformation in various forms,and different modes achieve the cognitive effect by interactingwith the audience.
