Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Kazuo Ishiguro and The Buried Giant

Kazuo Ishiguro(1954-)is a Nobel Prize winner in literature,an English novelist,screenwriter,and short story writer.He was born in Nagasaki,Japan,and his family moved toEngland in 1960 when he was five years old.His cross-cultural background is indispensable to hiswriting,which makes him see things from different angles.He graduated from the University ofKent in 1978,gaining a bachelor’s degree in English and philosophy.Then he graduated from theUniversity of East Anglia with a master’s degree.Ishiguro is one of the most famouscontemporary novelists in the today’s world.He was nominated for four Man Booker awards andfinally won the award for his outstanding novel The Remains of the Day in 1989.In 2005,hisnovel Never Let Me Go was called by The Times one of the best novels of the year.His seventhnovel,The Buried Giant,was published in 2015.In 2017,the Swedish Academy of Sciencesawarded Ishiguro the Nobel Prize for literature.

Ishiguro is engaged in the themes of past and war,and most of his novels are set in the pastfilled with sorrow and war.A Pale View of Hill(1982),An Artist of the Floating World(1986)and The Remains of the Day(1989)are all set in the period closely after the Second World War.And Never Let Me Go(2005)was set in the 1980s and 1990s.The Buried Giant(2015)is set inthe period after King Arthur’s ruling.Ishiguro once expressed his views in an interview that hisfavorite settings are pre-war and post-war settings,and he was interested in people having to faceup to the reality which is against their beliefs.In the process of revealing various ethical dilemmasfaced by the characters,he successfully constructs a maze-like-world full of confusion,uncertainty and profound implication,and endows the works with rich connotations throughthinking about today’s social problems and caring about human’s destiny.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance

Ishiguro is an active writer in the contemporary British literary world.His works absorb thenutrition of both British culture and Japanese culture.His works clearly reflect the tendency ofdiversification and highlight the features of postmodernist works.This thesis takes one ofIshiguro’s works as the research object and the postmodernist literary features in his works as the research content,because the research method of interpreting Ishiguro’s new work The BuriedGiant with postmodernist theory is still relatively novel.Under the theoretical guidance ofpostmodernist literature,through reading the original text and literature,this paper tries toexamine the creative features of Ishiguro’s works from a new perspective on the basis of theoriginal research results,so as to further understand some postmodernist features in his novels andexcavate the artistic originality that can cause readers’lasting aesthetic fulfillment.
