was done by a runaway nigger named Jim'. Due to southern upbringing and vision Huck Finn himself has inconstant sympathy over Jim, who ‘ain't no bad nigger, gentlemen" implying that social order has a strong influence over an individual, similar to Faulkner's novel ‘Light in August' where Christmas is despised by whole society because of racial prejudice.

This vision and order of Old America of old South is described in Twain's short story ‘A True story'. The same as Huck Finn Aunt Rachel reveals what kind of ‘the social limitations which American ‘civilization' imposes on individual freedom' (Hutchinson, 1998:135). Chapter 3 looks and identifies particular aspects and issues described in ‘True Story' on slavery in America's South.

3.3 ‘TRUE STORY, REPEATED WORD FOR WORD, AS I HEARD IT' AND SLAVERY ISSUE

‘IT was summer time, and twilight. We were sitting on the porch of the farm-house', there was sitting a servant, but colored. The term ‘colered' somehow immediately conjures up a negative stereotyped image of a person who ‘has specific, definitive, inherent, behavioural tendencies and capacities, which distinguish it from other race (Hutchinson, 1998:135). The images of different races whose colour has been painted in ‘dark unnatural' shades have created ‘stereotypes, ethnic slurs, and racial prejudice as expressed in proverbs and proverbial expressions' (Online7). Besides, black race also Native Americans, Jews, Asians, European immigrants such as Irish, Italians, Eastern Europeans, Latin Americans have undergone the whole amplitude of misery, including inferiority, pain, hate etc.

However, African Americans are the only group who still needlessly suffers from the race hate and segregation up to present days. Black race still carries that burden of past in their heart.

From lip to lip has preserved the saying ‘the only good Indian is a dead Indian' underlying the whole spectrum of inferiority of other race then Caucasian in the United States. It links to a white Southerner stereotyped thinking of black race whose general characteristics are as follows ‘thieving', ‘infernal' ‘feeble minded ‘immoral' lazy, superstitious, and even not humans.

Aunt Sally from ‘Huckleberry Finn' called the ‘Negro' sort of ‘sub human' (Hutchinson, 1998:137). The statement below shows her attitude towards a black person:

"Good gracious! anybody hurt?"

"No'm. Killed a nigger."

"Well, it's lucky; because sometimes people do get hurt.

‘Sometimes people do get hurt' unlike niggers who are not humans in eyes of society of those times. The last extract from Huck Finn reveals how powerful has beenwhite supremacy and it links to a famous chief saying thatEuropeans, "...they made many promises, more than we can remember, they never kept but one, they promised to take our land. And they took it". The New Land was not a land of new opportunities for many generations to go.

A servant, colored one would sit respectfully and her frame was ‘mighty and stature; she was sixty years old, but ‘her eye was undimmed and her strength unabated'. Mister Clemens always sees her chee论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
