ately constructed and connectives are often employed to organize the relationship of clauses. On the contrary, Chinese is a paratactic language. Sentences are arranged of clauses one after another without connectives showing the relations between them. Besides, English and Chinese have many other differences. For example, English language is usually impersonal, passive and indirect, whereas, Chinese language is personal, active and direct. Those differences usually cause obstacles in English reading comprehension. 2.1.3 Semantic difference The sentences constructing a passage need to be not only meaningful but also logical. To work out the effective information of a text, readers should not only correctly get the literal meaning but also clearly sort out the logical relationships among each sentence or meaning unit. Most Chinese students can work out the literal meaning of the text. However, the implied meaning or “meaning between the lines” often confuse them. For example: ex. 2-3 a. “If you are interested in buying a pair of contact lenses, be prepared to pay $200 or more. Generally there are three main reasons why people want contact lenses. You may need them because the cornea of your eye is misshapen and ordinary glasses are not satisfactory. If so, you’ll be in the group that comprises 1 to 2 percent of contact lens wearers. But you may want them for a sport or a vocation. Perhaps you’re a baseball player, a boxer, a swimmer, an aviator, an actor, or perhaps you’re engaged in an industry where flying particles may endanger your eyes. If you get your contact lenses for one of these reasons, you are in the same group with about 20 percent of the users. But if for some reasons, you feel that glasses are handicapping our appearance and you would rather have invisible glasses, you’ll have lots of company. About 79 per cent of lens users hope to improve their looks.” Question: Which of the following can represent the writer’s intention? A. To give the reasons why people wearing contact lenses B. To say that man is sometimes vainglorious Most readers will prefer A because they can easily find evidences in the second sentence of the text to support their decision. However, if taking a more careful reading, they will find that they have neglected the rational relationship between the three reasons, that is, the writer never fails to mention the percentage of users after giving each reason. The percentage of people who buy contact lenses for the first reason is 1 to 2 percentage, for the second one is 20 percentage and for the third one is 79 percentage. Readers should pay more attention to the key word “main” in the second sentence of this passage. The three reasons are all presented one by one in this passage, so are the three percentages. Judging from the three percentages, readers could work out which reason is the really MAIN reason. There are also some language clues in the passage showing that the majority who buy lenses mainly because they “feel that glasses are handicapping their appearance” and they “hope to improve their looks”. English sentences are often constructed by connectives and the logical relationship is very precise. However, Chinese sentences are often organized without any connectives and its logical relationship is very concise. Those semantic differences also cause obstacles in English reading comprehension. 2.1.4 Anaphoric expression differences Anaphoric expression is another pitfall for Chine论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
