o create the concept of optimal relevance.Based on relevance theory, the goal of reading comprehension is to obtain the writer’s intendedmeaning. Reading is regarded as an ostensive-inferential communication, which is a psycholinguisticprocess: readers start with a set of linguistic symbols that they have been chosen by writers to representsthe thought that they wish to express; it ends when readers have interpreted as much of the writer’sintended meaning as it is relevant to them by inference. Readers participate in the whole process actively. Itis also a process of seeking optimal relevance constantly, constrained by the principle of relvance.In senior high schools, reading is also placed at the key point as the most important receptive skill inforeign language acquisition. However, though students spend a lot of time practicing reading, and teachershave made great efforts to improve students’ reading, the results are far more from satisfactory. As a matterof fact, how to help students improve students’ reading remains a tough job.


  
  1.1 Research background研究背景
  Reading is the most basic skill of modern human social cognition approach and it is the most directmeans of people getting information. In recent years, China’s English reading teaching is important for ittakes up the most class time. For students, reading is not only the main task of learning English, but alsoone of the main key points in senior high school English exam. In senior high school English teaching, theteaching of reading draws considerable attention. Teachers and students have paid a lot of attention, butreading comprehension is still the main part where students lose point in test. The main problem is thatstudents are less able to judge the meaning of words from the context, lacking basic word-buildingknowledge, and background knowledge is narrow, so students have poor ability in reading comprehension.Thus, a useful approach applying in reading comprehension is imperative.


  
  1.2 The requirements of English curriculum standards英语课程标准的要求
  In China, the Ordinary High school English Curriculum Standard is always the most authoritativeand useful guidance of reading teaching. Therefore, before the research on reading teaching, a closeexamination on the Ordinary High school English Curriculum Standard is necessary. The standard centerson several concepts. They are the cultivation of students’ integrative ability of language application,learning application, and learning strategy, the development of students’ emotion and passion, andpragmatic competence.
