The average score and standard deviation of the two classes are shown in Table 5-1 (a). As can be seen, the mean score of EC is 24.68 and the standard deviation is 6.754. The mean score of the CC is 24.43, and the standard deviation is 6.990. In the independent sample T-test shown in Table 5-1(b), Sig=0.730 > 0.05, that is, the assumption of equal variance is valid. t=0.180, df=92, Sig.(2-tailed) =0.857 > 0.05. Therefore, there is no significant difference between the pre-test scores of the EC and the CC, indicating that there is little difference in English reading ability between the two classes, which meets the experimental condition for the teaching of critical reading strategies.

Chapter Six Conclusion

6.1 Major Findings

Based on schema theory and constructivist learning theory, this study applies critical reading strategies to English reading teaching in senior high school. Through questionnaires, tests, and interviews, it is found that senior high school students know about and apply critical reading strategies little. The author selects two classes with comparable reading ability as the EC and CC, and adopts critical reading strategies in the English reading class of the EC. After the four-month teaching experiment, the following conclusions are drawn by analyzing the data: 

(1) Critical reading strategies have positive influence on students’ attitudes toward English reading.

After the four-month experiment, through the questionnaire and interview analysis, it can be found that the application of critical reading strategies has brought about a positive change in students’ attitudes towards English reading. At the end of the experiment, the students have a more positive attitude towards English reading, especially their confidence in English reading is significantly improved, they became more interested in English reading, and they are willing to read English outside of class. There are two reasons for the change in students’ reading attitudes: Firstly, most students find that the use of critical reading strategies in reading is effective in solving their difficulties and problems in reading, which effectively increases their confidence in reading; Secondly, most students find that they can learn a lot  about foreign cultures by reading English texts and that their English performance has improved significantly after using the correct method to read, and most of them realize the significance of English reading in English learning, which has greatly increased their enthusiasm for English reading.
