Chapter OneINTRODUCTION

1.1 Main Themes in Canadian Aboriginal Fictions

Canadian Aboriginal fictions have been impacted and influenced by Europeancolonialism for a relatively long time,and its literary theme has gradually changed withthe historical backdrop and social development.Similar to the North American Indians,Canadian Aboriginal peoples also believe that all the power of the native nation comesfrom the Sacred Circle.In the Sacred Circle of life,all creatures,material ornon-material,are equal and interdependent.This concept runs through the wholeunderstanding of life and the universe of Canadian Aboriginal peoples and is reflectedin literary works.The way the Canadian Aboriginal peoples organized the society isrecognizing and respecting everyone’s spiritual identity and self-worth.Therefore,whenEuropeans landed in America in 1492,colonists received respect and humanity from the Aborigines.However,Aborigines were expelled from their land by colonists and weretrapped in a poor living environment where far away from modern civilization inreserves.The occupation of Canada by European colonists was an impact anddestruction on the social ideology,language,and culture of Aboriginal peoples.European colonialism also gradually changed the traditional modes and themes ofAboriginal fictions by obliterating ideology in traditional culture.

After the founding of the Canadian Confederation,the attitude of Aboriginalpeople to the national policy promulgated by the government had also been stronglyreflected in Aboriginal fictions.Emily Pauline Johnson was a famous poetess in Canadaat the end of the nineteenth century.She was the first Aborigine to publish literaryworks in Canada.In 1895,she published her first collection of poems The WhiteWampum.In 1903,her second collection of poems Canadian Born was published and in1912 she published her Flint and Feather.In her poems,her nation and people werebrave and fearless with good hearts.

1.2 Introduction to Two Novels:Three-Day Road and Green Grass,Running Water

Joseph Boyden is a Canadian novelist and a short-story writer of Irish,Scottish,and Metis roots,who was born on 31 October 1966 in Toronto.He grew up in a strictIrish Catholic family and his father Raymond Wilfrid Boyden is a highly decoratedmedical officer of World War II.He studied in Toronto at Brebeuf College School andYork University and subsequently at the University of New Orleans.
