      大型连锁超市行业需要巨大的资金投入,大型连锁超市需要获得足够的资金以及丰富的金融资本设立店铺,优良的配电系统,方便的地点,成本低和良好口碑的来抵御竞争对手。因此,几乎没有新进入者存在大型连锁超市行业的进入壁垒高。对沃尔玛的潜在进入者的威胁不是很大的行业。

      The threat of the entry of new competitors:There are high barriers to MBA entry in large chain supermarket industry. The entry of large chain supermarket industry needs a huge amount of capital investment because large supermarket chains need to set up stores enough to obtain economies of scale.Wal-Mart as well as Carrefour has an   abundant financial capital,excellent distribution systems, convenient locations, low cost and good word of mouth to fend off competitors.Therefore, the large chain supermarket industry barriers to entry are high so that almost no new entrants exist. The threat of thepotential industry entrants for Wal-Mart’ is not great.

      The threat of substitute products or services: Substitutes arethe other goods which can meet the same requirements as the products offer. If the alternatives are attractive on price or performance, then the number of buyers will be attracted to change their habits.With the development of network technology, e-commerce is becoming the first shopping choice for many consumers, rather than go to the store shopping. Online shopping is very convenient for the sake of no lining up, direct home delivery and less time. The entire shopping process only requires several clicks on the computer through the mouse. Grocery stores scattered in the communities have no advantage in the number of product categories and commodity prices relative to Wal-Mart, but grocery stores still got a lot of consumers’ heart due to proximity and convenience. Generally speaking, the consumers have the choice of going to the grocery stores to buy the desired commodities but there cannot befound low price the same as Wal-Mart.
      The bargaining power of buyers: The customer is the god for the company especially in the retail industry. If consumers feel that the products provided by Wal-Mart have high prices or quality problems, then they will switch to Wal-Mart's competitors that can provide him with better quality or lower prices.There are many stores can meet demand of the customers. The customers can choose anyone which is thought to be best. Hence, buyers have strong power in this material rich and competitive market.
      The bargaining power of suppliers:Wal-Mart's sales in 2011 reached 419 billion, such a huge sales scale makes Wal-Mart doom to be one of the largest customers for any supplier. Wal-Mart can switch to other suppliers, if the original suppliers cannot meet the requirements. Meanwhile threatening to change the supplier can be taken as a scare tactic in the bargaining. But for some large suppliers which have dominant position in the industry such as Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Coca-Cola and Pepsi would have more power in the bargaining.
