摘要:As mentioned in the last section, by comparing advanced Chinese EFL learnerswith native English speaking writers in applying modals in their writings, thesimilarities or disparities between the two groups will be known.

odality concludes all types of commitments to aproposition to a certain degree.Whatever those experts offer to define the term modality, it is almost widelyaccepted that modality conveys the users' attitude or opinion towards a certainproposition or the situation the proposition implies. As the core of expressions of modality, a set of modal verbs denote the emotionof the speaker. According to Halliday (49),modality is expressed in the followingways: finite modal operators, mood adjunct, adjective predicator and nominalequivalent. As the primary component of modality, finite modal operators, also knownas modal verbs or modal auxiliaries, directly indicate speakers' various attitudes andjudgment of the state or stances, for example, permission, obligation, necessity, probability, wish and so on. 2.2 The Classification of Modal Verbs
There are three groups of views to classify modal verbs in terms of theirsemantics in total, namely, the monosemy view, the polysemy view and the ambiguityview. The monosemy view believes that each modal verb has a core for all themeanings that is able to be derived from, which is the basis to gain other possibleinterpretations which this modal may contextually produce (Parafragou 1998:381).The polysemantic view holds tiiat each modal contains various meanings, and thethird one describes the merger and ambiguity within and between modal verbs withCoates5 fuzzy set as its representative. Among the three views, the last two appear to5be more scientific and convincing. Due to the limited space, only the findings of somerepresentative and significant experts who support the last two views in this sectionwill be presented. Therefore, he presents another way to classify modal verbs semantically:subject-oriented and discourse-oriented modals. Subject-oriented modals exposeinformation of the subject of a sentence by revealing the subject's features, intentionsand so on. The information as a part of the proposition is reflected from the content ofa certain sentence while discourse-oriented modals stress the roles tiiat participantsplay in a speech to display the opinions or attitudes of the speaker and the listenerduring their speeches.
