Discourse Analysis
The present study intends to do a detailed discourse analysis on the short sketchSchiller Street and links the discourse to its social-cultural context, while its ultimatepurpose is to verify and reveal the ideological and hegemonic issues and problemsembedded in the discourse. Since the targeted discourse is a controversial one thatmay embed serious social problems, the analytical and investigation process isinevitably critical. Therefore, the study is in need of a theoretical framework that canbridge between the micro discursive dimension and the macro social-culturaldimension, and at the same time being critical in order to be able to look intoembedded implications and to make explicit “connections and causes which arehidden” (Fairclough, 1992:5). Considering the aims and needs of the present study, atheoretical framework as well as approach of critical discourse analysis seems to bemost suitable for the analytical process to base on. Therefore, reviews and discussionson CDA will be provided below.

2.2 Language and Gender
Language and gender is a diverse and interdisciplinary field. Various theories andmethodologies have been applied in relevant studies. Positivist, experimental, poststructural, ethnographic, ethno-methodological, phenomenological, as well asdiscursive approaches can all be found active within research works in language andgender, producing and reproducing what Susan Speer (2005:7–8) mentioned as“different, and often competing, theoretical and political assumptions about the waydiscourse, ideology and gender identity should be conceived and understood”.This part is a review of previous empirical and qualitative studies in languageand gender. Firstly, the overall development as well as major aspects in this researchfield will be introduced. Then the focus will move onto domestic language and genderstudies that took a specific type of discourse — media discourse as their researchobject, for the targeted discourse in the present study is also a media discourse. Thiswill be followed by a more elaborate review of previous domestic studies that took thesame targeted discourse — the short sketch Schiller Street as their research object andlooked into the short sketch from a language and gender angle of view. Evaluations ofthese studies will be made; their relations with the present study as well as theirweaknesses that make the present study significant will be explored.
