CHAPTER FOURCRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS ONTHE SHORT SKETCH SCHILLER STREET

This chapter makes up the central part of the present study: the analytical process ofthe targeted discourse — the short sketch Schiller Street in the 2015 CCTV SpringFestival Gala. The two major components of the analytical process are the micro andmacro analysis of the targeted discourse, with subdivisions of different aspectsaccording to the analytical procedure elaborated in last chapter.

4.1 Analysis of the discourse as text and discursive practice (Micro layer)

In Fairclough (1992), he distinguished the identity, relational, and ideational functionsof language (34), of which the former two have been grouped by Halliday (1978) asthe interpersonal function. Two constructive effects of discourse corresponding to thislanguage function are contributions of discourse to the construction of social identitiesand subject positions and to the construction of social relations between people. Thesetwo constructive effects of discourse could be clearly manifested in the targetdiscourse under analysis here, and this section will focus on exploring and illustratinghow the present discourse produce these effects through what Halliday (1978) hasadditionally distinguished as “textual functions” (the interactions among bits ofinformation and parts of a text, as well as their links to the outside social situation).This section will be divided into three sub-sections according to the three majoraspects which the analytical procedure elaborated in last chapter: the two femalecharacters’ self-shaping process of their gender images, the three male characters’influence in the two female characters’ image-shaping progress and their relationshipwith the females, as well as the plot development of the story.

CONCLUSION

This chapter first summarizes the major findings of the present study categorizedaccording to the three research questions, and then implications in the findings as wellas related discussions will be provided, with limitations of the study and suggestionsfor future works at the end.This study has adopted Fairclough’s (1992) three-dimensional framework of CDA asits theoretical framework combining with an two-layer multi-aspect set of analyticalunits including Bamberg’s (2011) three dimensions in identity construction andFairclough’s (1992) interactional control features, “horizontal” intertextual relationsas well as ideology and hegemony in the detailed critical discourse analysis of theshort sketch Schiller Street. The major findings achieved in the micro and macroanalysis answer the three research findings as follows:To answer the first research question (What different female gender images of“女神 (Nv Shen)” and “女汉子 (Nv Hanzi) were shaped in the short sketch SchillerStreet?), micro analytical work applying Bamberg’s “three dilemmas” has beenconducted, looking into the two females’ self-shaping process of their gender imagesand summarized the different gender images they shaped. The gender images of a “女神” are mostly positive ones, while still conformed to and constrained by traditionalgender conventions and standards of a typical Chinese female who gains successmainly through recognition and appreciation from males.
