Englis h novels. The Chinese works are as follows: Flaubert’s Madame Bovary,Romain Rolland’s Colas Breugnon and All for Love or the World Well Lost and so on. Xu summ arized his translation practice that he translated English and French literary works into Chinese in the 50th; he translated Chinese T ang and Song poem s into English and French in the 80th; he took lead in rhymed English and French translation in the 90th; and he achieved summit in translation in the last years of 20th century. However, Xu Yuanchong’s translation career is not as sm ooth as what we im agine. During the period of Great Leaps Forward and Great Proletarian Cu ltural Revolution, 1959-1976, Xu was labelled as a counter -revolutionary intellectual. And he m et a great difficulty in his translation. However, Xu Yuanchong did not give up translation, instead he translated Mao Zedong Poem secretly in his own way. His translation of Mao Zedong’s poems has not been influenced by the social background. On contrary, his translation was highly appreciated by Qian Zhongshu and Zhu Guangqian. Brightness always follows the darkness. After the Great P roletarian Cultural Revolution, he published The Selected Poems of Mao Zedong, which includes both French and English version. This achievem ent was regarded as a m ilestone of Chinese peom translation into English and French in translation field. This is the first time Chinese translator translated Chinese peoms into English and French.

Chapter 2 Xu’s Main Translation Thoughts
2.1 Literary Translation--An Art
Professor Xu Y uanchong is fam ous for his Poetry translation. He got m ost of his translation theories and thoughts from his poem translation practice and he uses what he get to instructs his translation practice. The so called “Three Beauty” is beauty of sense, beauty of sound and beauty of form. Xu got the initial idea of “three beauty” from Lu Xun’s
thesis From Language to Article and firstly pointed his idea in 42 Selected Poems of Mao Zedong. Beauty of sense is the beauty of ideological contents which makes readers feel good. Beauty of sound is the beauty of rhym e which sounds good. Beauty of form is the beauty of words a nd sentences arrangement which looks good. “The translation poem s need to co nvey not only the sense beauty but also the sound beauty and form beauty of the original poem s”. [12] The relationship between the three beauty are indispensab le. They complem ent with each other . Xu positiv ely advocate this principle of Three Bea uty in poe m translation practice. He f ollows this p rinciple in h is translation as well. Xu’ s thought can be conclu ded as: “For one thing, to achieve beauty in sense so as to move readers’ heart; to achieve beauty in sound so as to please readers’ ears; to achieve beauty in form so as to appeal to readers’ eyes.”[13]
