本文是一篇商务英语教学论文,本研究对《商务英语阅读教程》(第二版)的适用性进行了综合评价。根据第五章的数据分析和结果,总结了该系列商务英语教材的优缺点,并提出了相应的启示和更好地使用该系列教材的建议。最后,本文将通过说明本研究的局限性和讨论未来研究的潜在领域来完成。
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

1.1 Research Background

After thirty-year reform and opening-up, the national development strategy of China has changed  from  “bringing  in”  to  “going  out”,  which  means  spreading  Chinese  brands, Chinese  design,  Chinese  manufacturing  and  even  Chinese  culture  abroad  rather  than introducing  foreign  technology  or  management  philosophy  only  (Zhang,  2014).  Now, Chinese businessmen are carrying out business activities overseas. They should not only bring  international  markets  advanced  technology,  products,  and  ideas,  but  also  handle problems and difficulties that may be met with in global markets as well. To fulfill great social needs for Business English talents, colleges and universities have been authorized to establish their own Business English programs. Until the end of 2012, the undergraduate Business English program is listed altogether with the English program and Translation program as three paralleled programs in the Catalogue of Undergraduate Programs (2012). With the rapid development of undergraduate Business English programs, scholars and experts are devoted to the teaching reform of Business English programs and standardize its education model. The goal is to cultivate professional talents who not only acquire business knowledge, English language knowledge and communication skills, but also well understand the social and cultural situation of foreign countries (Weng, 2009).

Since  learners’  capabilities  are  closely  connected  with  the  curriculum  system  of Business English program, the satisfaction of market needs cannot be realized without appropriate textbook. However, with all kinds of Business English textbooks available, textbook users are often overwhelmed to select the right one. How to evaluate textbooks and by what kind of criteria become a challenging task for textbook users and scholars.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Present Study

Textbooks are regarded as a systematic syllabus that plays a role in giving both teachers and students  a sense of  structure and progress  (Ur, 1996, p. 184).  In second language education, textbooks work as models so that learners could learn to use language in  a correct  way,  which  are  beneficial  for  the  organization  of  teaching-learning  process (Hutchinson and Water, 1987, p. 96). However, textbooks in practical use are criticized for failing  to  identify  the  target  learners,  or  providing  unrealistic  experiences  that  is incomprehensible  for  students  (Sheldon,  1988;  Biook  and  Mohammad,  2013).  The unsatisfactory performance of textbooks in practice implies that more attention should be paid to evaluating the suitability of a textbook, though research on this aspect is not enough.
