2 Practice of Tang Poetry Translation
One can not talk about Tang poetry translation criticism without a mention of itstranslation practice, for the former is usually, if not always, based on the latter.Therefore, it is necessary to have a review of the practice of Tang poetry translationboth within and without China.Most of the Tang poetry translations fall into the following three categories:verse into prose; metrical verse into free verse; metrical verse into metrical verse.Generally speaking, the line between the three groups is drawn according to thetranslators’ different focuses on the original works. But why are the different focuses?The answer can be found in Chapter Two where detailed information on poetrytranslation theories is provided.

 

1.3 Version Diversity of Tang Poetry Translation
With persistent efforts made by devoted scholars, various versions of Tangpoems have gradually been produced and are still accumulating, hence the diverseversions of a particular poem. If all of those versions are put together, some maywonder at the sharp differences between them, for some of the versions of a certainpoem are indeed poles apart. This raises a question: why all these differences? Atfirst glance, it seems that there is no need to decent this question with an answer, forit is common sense that literary works are open to different interpretations. However,also among the reasons, which is not a big concern of this thesis. Through the abovereasoning, one may get the impression that variations do exist among translators anduncertainties do accompany the poetry itself. Thus, zero weirdness for the appearingof assorted versions.Then, questions arise: how to make discrimination between versions? Whichone stands out and which one is outshined? Are all those versions satisfactory? Onecan resort to translation criticism to seek for answers.In writing this section, the author is trying to clear some doubts within peoplewho are in dark or unaccustomed to the diverse existent versions of Tang poetry andtherefore, may be not quite clear about the significance of Tang poetry translationcriticism.
