1 Task Description

1.1 Background of the Task

Energy crisis is a common challenge confronting nations across the world.Fossilfuel makes up a significant portion of energy resources.Understanding its developinghistory and its influences on the world helps us understand the situation we face today.The book Burning up-A Global History of Fossil Fuel Consumption was selected forits significance for energy saving and lifestyle shaping,and for its completetranslation copyrights in both simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese.As a popularscientific book,the reading and translation of the book give the author an opportunityto research.

In the translation of the selected text,the author has to address the followingissues:the challenging terminologies,restoration of language style in target language,logical relations between lines,transition of voice;deal with Abstract nouns,and etc.Among them,the translation of abstract nouns in the popular science text is theprimary focus of this report.

Wang Zhenping(2006)stated that:From newspaper sketches to popular sciencemagazines,from daily technology to the introduction of new international scientific dynamics,all of them belong to popular science text.A distinct contradiction betweenthe importance of text translation of popular science and the lack of research ofpopular science translation also becomes an imperfection of research intocontemporary translation theories.

1.2 Choice of the Text

The book Burning up-A Global History of Fossil Fuel Consumption presentshow fossil fuels have developed through several revolutions and how they affect theworld.

This book contains three parts:the contexts of fossil fuels from chapter one tochapter four,the chronologies of fossil fuels from chapter five to chapter ten,and thereflections and conclusions at the last three chapters.The writer,Simon Pirani,is aSenior Visiting Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies,and haswritten widely on Soviet history and energy issues.His books include Burning Up:AGlobal History of Fossil Fuel Consumption(Pluto,2018),The Russian Revolution inRetreat(Routledge,2008)and Change in Putin’s Russia(Pluto,2009).

The author selects chapter two:Energy Technologies and chapter three:Energyin Society as the source text for translation and writing of this report.In these two chapters,the writer provides a comprehensive introduction to technologicaldevelopment and its influences on humanity.These two chapters feature typicallinguistic characteristics with a number of terminologies.Translation of these chapterscould help to understand what kind of difficulties a popular science text might presentand how to solve these problems.

2 Process Description
