作为一个爆红的网络流行语，“屌丝”该如何翻译成英语呢？人们在网络上展开了热烈的讨论，屌丝被翻译成“dickhair，common people，ordinary guys，grassroots，grassroot guys，loser，unprivileged loser，nobody, sucker，nerd，underdog”。比较多的人赞同采用归化的翻译策略，将其译为“underdog”。为此，笔者对这两个词语的用法和内涵做了梳理，认为“屌丝”和“underdog”并不是对等语。

2“屌丝”与“underdog”的内涵

最初，“屌丝”多指“身份卑微、生活平庸、未来渺茫、感情不顺、不被社会认同的‘苦逼男青年’。”[1]他们也渴望得到社会的高度认可，但又不知道该怎么去做，生活没有目标，缺乏热情，不满于无聊的生活但又不知道如何改变自己的命运。这样的心态普遍存在于我们周围，从而造就了网络上“屌丝”的爆红。面对普通、平庸的自我，人们自嘲：我是屌丝，争相认领这一称号。屌丝是这个时代小人物的形象代表，屌丝文化是自发的、群体性自嘲。目前，“屌丝”一词比较流行的英译是underdog, 例如新航道英语培训机构高调宣布“屌丝”的正确英译是“underdog”，也有学者在探讨时尚新词语英译时，主张采用“偷梁换柱”使之“脱胎换骨”，将“屌丝”译成“underdog”。[2]笔者对此不敢苟同。首先，我们来考察权威英语词典对underdog 的释义。Underdog: n. 1. a weaker person, country etc, that is alwaystreated badly by others受虐待者，受欺负者，弱者2. a person, team etc, that is expected to lose in a competitionwith another.(比赛中)可能会输的人或队，处于劣势的人或队①从词典的释义来看，underdog 尤指在对抗竞争中处于劣势的一方，可以指称个人、团队甚至国家。例如：1) Most of the crowd were cheering for the underdog to winjust this one time. javascript:;人群里的大多数人都在为劣势一方鼓劲，希望他哪怕就赢这一次。2) In their football match with Brazil, Switzerland are the un derdogs.与巴西队进行足球比赛的瑞士队是个弱队。3) But South Korea's status as an underdog is wearing thin. ja vascript:;但韩国正逐渐告别弱者地位。笔者同时查阅了美国当代英语语料库（COCA），该库目前单词容量为4.5亿，语料来自1990-2012年，每6-9个月更新一次数据，每年收集的数据约2000万词，涵盖美国1990年至今的口语、小说、杂志、报纸和学术期刊5大类型的语料，这5个类型和每5年时段的语料数据基本呈平均分布的态势。笔者在该语料库中找到973个例句，逐一阅读，考察underdog的使用语境，并摘录典型语料如下。3. 2012.
