Conclusion


The importance of vocabulary can never be overestimated since we can notspeak, read, understand or write a language without knowing a lot of words. And thereis no magic cure for not knowing enough words. For non-English majors in theeducational setting in china, vocabulary is a plight since the students do not haveenough access to authentic and pure learning environment to acquire the language asnaturally as native speakers. By Nation (1990), the high frequency 2,000 to 3,000word families are the most basic words to realize successful speaking, listening,reading and writing while at the same time, the New College English CurriculumRequirements for non- English majors set the basic requirement of 4,500 words. So,to successfully go on with English learning, especially for students of tertiaryeducation, the high- frequency 3,000 word is a necessity.
The statistics tells us that the vocabulary level of the respondents is 2802 at the6,000 word level, which is far from the basic requirement for non- English majors.Therefore, the task of vocabulary learning should not be put into the hand of students.Instead, the learners should be taught how to improve their vocabulary on their ownby understanding and employing appropriate vocabulary learning strategies. Althoughmost students admit that they sometimes or often use certain kinds of strategies tohelp them, the finding of the study is that the percentage of students who prefer rotememorization is high. Some researchers hold a negative view toward the use of wordlist because they think the students will only gain the superficial knowledge of thewords and it is time-consuming. However, in practical learning and teaching it isnoticed that reading passages and listening passages are always preceded or followedby a list of words key to understanding the passage on which a large proportion fostudents rely on to help them to know the new words and to review the already knownwords. The de-contextualized way of learning is traditional and should be abandoned.For learners it is important to be aware of certain specifically and professionallydeveloped word lists. To non- English majors in the educationally setting in china,they should have a good command of the New College English CurriculumRequirements on which basis every exam is designed and language skills aredeveloped.
It is of importance to realize that students do not rely on one particular strategy.Rather, selectively paying attention to some words, using context, guessing andlooking up are also frequently used. What cautions is that the strategy of guessingfrom context is how native speakers most frequently learn the meaning of the new L1words.
