2.1 Research on Gail Jones and Her Works

Gail Jones is an Australian postmodern writer majored in fine arts at theUniversity in Melbourne which has made a significant influence on her distinctwriting style of her works.Later she obtained her PhD at the University of WesternAustralia.So far,Gail Jones has published eight full-length novels and two short-storycollections.

In virtue of her unique literary narrative style,Jones’works have received mixedreviews from different critics.As a practitioner of Modernism,Jones’worksconcentrate on“a wealth of critical knowledge of linguistics,semiotics,films,optics,the phenomenology of perception and postmodern theory—knowledge notfore-grounded in this reading of the diverse ways that photography and mirroringfeature in the fiction”(L.Jacobs 205).In addition,each of Jones’works has beennarrated by at least two protagonists in multiple-narrative structure from past topresent.Jones’fiction mainly deals with the obstacle situations such as memory loss,trauma,isolation and guilt at both an individual and national level.The tone of Jones’writing is a metaphysical and poetic style which is more peaceful and quieter ratherthan intense and loud.Gail Jones holds the view that“I suppose I like to think of the text as not just an active representation,but something that shifts in its communicativepower”(Maria 2).“She shows the tentative nature of fiction,the selective and strangeways in which we value books.She uses words that evoke sensory appeal,emotion,aswell as ideas,words that are always multiform and indeterminate,meaning relying onpatterning(music and colour)as much as denotation”(Sharrad 3).For somesupporters,her works have been appreciated as an artist’s works.Scholar Wimmerdefined Jones’style as“the elegantly intricate prose of Patrick White or ThomasMann”(Wimmer 230).

2.2 Research on Sorry at Home and Abroad
