p between He and humans? Young Dickinson began observing the world and searching for her own explanations in her poetry. Her attitude toward spiritual matters was more complex than her poem “Faith slips — and laughs, and rallies —” (Dickinson F373A) implies. In her poems, she manifested what she experienced and tried to establish her own understanding of God in her mind, that is, her understanding of the world:

I never lost as much but twice,  And that was in the sod.  Twice have I stood a beggar  Before the door of God!  Angels — twice descending  Reimbursed my store — Burglar Banker — Father!  I am poor once more! (Dickinson F39A)

2.2 Dickinson’s Corroboration with Science

A number of Dickinson’s predecessors and peers expressed their disdain for science and considered it to be eclipsing human mind as the new holy grail of people’s quest for certainty. William Wordsworth’s Star Gazers is presumably representative of the anti-science poetry of that period:

Whatever be the cause, 'tis sure that they who pry and pore Seem to meet with little gain, seem less happy than before:  One after One they take their turn, nor have I one espied That doth not slackly go away, as if dissatisfied. (Wordsworth 89)

In this poem, Wordsworth suggests that people who look at the stars with a telescope are less happy and dissatisfied than those who do not, suggesting that science is detrimental to people’s quest for the Divine. Dickinson, however, deviates from him in this case. She is against the view that the necessary consequence of science must be the opposite of the belief. In fact, Dickinson embraces scientific inventions as well as other scientific discoveries in order to solve problems in her inner world. She applies a marvellous scientific vocabulary to her poetic innovations for all intents and purposes. To be more specific, over 200 poems of hers involve scientific terms relating to chemistry, physics, mathematics...

Chapter Four Deconstruction of Pragmatism in Dickinson’s Poetry

4.1 Pragmatist Coercion of the Individual by Community

In the following poem, Dickinson warns about the very negative side of Pragmatism by showing us the coercion of community on each individual:

Who Giants know, with lesser Men  Are incomplete, and shy —  For Greatness, that is ill at ease  In minor Company —   A Smaller, could not be perturbed — The Summer Gnat displays —  Unconsc论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
