The impersonal irony is a common type of irony.Its ironic function does not dependon the ironist but on a person who is mocked by others.And it is usually stated in areasonable,gentle tone.Understatement is the typical technique in verbal irony.Mueckesaid,“Understatement is a rhetorical device in which the speaker or the author deliberatelymakes a situation which seems less important or serious than it really”(1982:52).Itweakens the importance of characters or events.But with a special way of triviality,itguides the readers to realize its severity.In Uncle Tom’s Cabin,understatement is usedwhen the author describes the encounters of black slaves.From those“little”encounters,this section will show the helplessness of the slaves and satirize the inhumanity of slavers.

1.1.1 The Improper Place:the Slaves’Hell

In Kentucky,a southern state in the United States,a large number of black people areenslaved by white people.These black people are not only suffering physically,but alsosuffering spiritually.Kentucky is the hell which can easily make them sad,miserable,andhopeless.However,in the face of the brutal truth,white people simply say that it is toblame for black people being born in the improper state.They don’t feel any regret,guilt,or regret despite knowing that the improper state they are referring to is hell for slaves.Instead,in an effort to hide their crimes against slaves,they make an effort to reduce their misery.However,they are ironic due to their purposeful understatement of sllaves’encounter.

1.2 The Innocent Irony

Innocent irony is a different kind of verbal irony.When the innocent words of a person pretending to be stupid or an innocent person shows an ironic meaning,it is calledinnocent irony.Generally speaking,there usually is a specific word in speaker’s utterance andit has different meaning with it’s previous meaning.It is the different meaning of the specificword that conveys the helplessness of slaves.

1.2.1 A Souvenir for an“Innocent”Slave

Someone who purposefully presents as ignorant praises other people.Instead ofpraising people,he wants to vent his dissatisfaction.Since he has no power and right tofight,he opts for a more euphemism method of expressing his displeasure by mockingridiculous happenings or people.
