Chapter Two The Manifestation of the Situational Ironyin Uncle Tom’s Cabin

2.1 The Irony of Events

Irony of events happens when a series of occurrences give rise to an unexpectedending. In other words,a person expects something to happen and makes great efforts for it,but as things progress, the result is different or in contrast to his or her expectation.Thecharacter more or less expresses reliance on the future, but some unforeseen turn of eventsreverses and frustrates his or her expectation, hope,or desire. The most typical example ofirony of events is O.Henry’s Gift of the Magi(1953),which tells the story that a couplewas unable to buy Christmas gifts because of poverty. When Christmas approached, thewife cut off her hair and sold it for her husband to buy a watch chain. The husband sold hisfamily heirloom gold watch to buy a comb for his wife.In the end, they found that theyused their most precious things in exchange for useless things.Even though the ending iscomic, they believed their love for each other was still not changed. However, unlike the comic ending of Gift of the Magi, the irony of events in Uncle Tom’s Cabin emerges in atragic ending.Mrs.Stowe uses the irony of events to show how the character feelsfrustrated because of the unexpected outcome.

2.1.1 Unexpected Events

2.2 The Irony of Simple Incongruity
