Moreover, a great many people believe that if such a horrible earthquake happened in the United States, the moving stories about teachers would not have happened. Can worshiping individualism be a rational reason for not saving students’ lives in such a monstrous disaster? Are those people who think American teachers would not save their students in a big earthquake right? This paper will answer these questions.
It is true that there’s a different recognition between Chinese and American people towards individualism based on the different cultural background. This paper will also illustrate profound implications of individualism from cultural differences between China and the United States, and analyze Runner-Fan event in an objective way. China is a great country with more than 5,000 years civilization, her cultural origins could date back to the primitive society. When Shanding cave people lived and worked together, the interests of the collective was sure to be much higher than personal interests. Under the influence of the collective interests, Chinese people hold individualism to be a bad value orientation and worshiping individualism should be looked down upon. However, individualism often leads Americans to see their   society making up of individuals who have their own values and ideas．As the core value orientation in America, individualism emphasizes democracy and equality. The true and typical feature of individualism of individualism is the advocacy of individual rights and freedom. But many Chinese misunderstand individualism as the extreme egoism and egocentricity when it is brought into China. Fan Meizhong, the runner-teacher, is the typical representative of this group of people. He feels so sad that he wasn’t born in America where he advocates is full of democracy and freedom after his escape behavior.
Individualism is the core value orientation in America, and it cannot be justified only with right or wrong. Instead, it should be justified objectively and justly. Different cultural backgrounds between China and America result in the different recognitions toward individualism. Only after we make certain the essential and positive significance of individualism, can we give an objective judge to Runner-Fan’s escape behavior and his explanation for it. Conversely, only when Chinese people acknowledge individualism in a right way, can they remove their misunderstanding towards individualism. Then after they realize individualism in a right way, they could take advantage of it in the construction of Chinese society.
Although there exists some negative effects in individualism, the positive and reasonable effects make America develop to be a powerful country in just 200 years. This thesis aims to make Chinese people have a better understanding and form a fair estimation of American individualism by analyzing the essence of American individualism. Only after right recognitions have been accepted, could China gain a brand-new way to develop and Chinese people build up their confidence and promote the reliance on their self-value.
