摘要:教师教学方式的选择以及学习策略的传授与运用,应密切关注教学对象固有的语言水平。中学阶段属于英语学习的初级阶段,绝大多数单词皆属于原始积累,作为整个英语教学中的一环,中学英语词汇教学在英语教学中举足轻重,而对于中学生自身来讲,掌握一定量的词汇是学好外语的前提和基础。

1.1 Research Background研究背景


一般认为,词汇的掌握是外语学习的一个重要组成部分,词汇在外语学习中的重要性是无可争议的(戴曼纯,2000:138)。词汇知识的缺乏是外语学习的主要障碍。It is generally believed that the mastery of vocabulary is an essential component of foreignlanguage learning and the importance of the vocabulary in foreign language learning goesuncontested (Dai Manchun, 2000: 138). The lack of vocabulary knowledge is the main obstaclefor the foreign language learners. Without huge amounts of vocabulary, listening, readingcomprehension, and writing are all attics in the air. Just as Wilkins (1972:111) states, “withoutgrammar very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” Therefore,vocabulary learning is crucial to students’ academic development. However, vocabulary learninghas always been the most challenging and time-consuming part of foreign language learningprocess.   https://www.51lunwen.org/EnglishVocabulary/  In China, vocabulary learning is the most difficult part for Chinese learners. In 2003, theMinistry of Education issued a “full-time compulsory education in junior middle school Englishcurriculum standards,” which requires juniors to know 800-900 words at the junior high stage.Although this requirement is reasonable, most of the students in junior treat it as an unfinishedtask.In recent years, with the rise of new educational concepts and pedagogic theories,vocabulary learning has aroused more and more attentions and remains in the research center ofthe second language acquisition up till now (Montrul, 2001). Most of the studies focus onvocabulary learning modes, that is, the direct learning, the indirect learning and also thecombining learning mode. There are different views about these different vocabulary learningmodes. Recently, most of the researchers in China have a preference of indirect vocabularylearning mode because the communicative teaching method is used in English teaching.However, is this method efficient for beginners, such as juniors? And is it accepted by juniors?So far the researches have not answered them clearly.Lots of researches on vocabulary learning modes have been carried out a lot at home andabroad recent years. However, most of the studies conducted concern intermediate or advancedlearners such as college students or adults. The research on low or beginning learners such asChinese junior middle school students is not sufficient.


1.2 The significance and purpose of the study研究目的和意义


Words are the basic building block of language, the units of meaning from which largerstructures such as sentences, paragraphs, and whole texts are formed. In China, English is acompulsory subject for middle school students, and expanding English vocabulary knowledge isone of the fundamental goals for Chinese students learning English. Because of various reasons,lacking of vocabulary has been a big problem faced by many students.First of all, since English is one of the compulsory subjects in Chinese middle school,students cannot spend too much of their time on English, let alone English vocabulary.Secondly, because the native language of China is Chinese, students have limited exposureto English.
