摘要:本文是一篇澳洲语言学课程作业。隐喻的研究有着悠久的历史。据说亚里士多德最早使用隐喻的手法在其作品中,自此以后人们开始关注隐喻的现象。隐喻是所有的语言都常用的一种修辞手法,不仅在文学作品中存在,而且在日常对话中也很多。隐喻在某种情形下方便我们更好的沟通,同时留下模糊的认知障碍。一方面,正确使用比喻避免直接说话带来的尴尬。它使人际关系和谐。另一方面,隐喻的本质是谈论其他事情的形式,使用识别和理解隐喻并不容易。在一些极端情况下,隐喻的使用甚至破坏了沟通。因此,我们看到比喻沟通的重要性。作为一种交际行为,翻译应正确处理隐喻。

environment of target receptors,it is found that the target language audience—English readers share the same image of“雪肤”and“花貌” with the source language audienceChinese readers. “Snow white skin” can make the English readers understand the whiteness of the girl’s skin, and “flower face” describes her beautiful face properly. So because of the same cognitive environment on the images shared between Chinese readers and English readers, the translator retains the same images“雪肤” and“花貌” in the target language.


Sperber and Wilson believed that the notion of a contextual effect is indispensable to a characterization of relevance. Having contextual effect is an essential condition for relevance, and if other things being equal, the stronger the contextual effects, the greater the relevance; the less processing efforts, the greater the relevance (Sperber and Wilson, 1995:119). It is obvious that whether a communication is successful or not depends on whether the optional contextual effect is realized; and the optional contextual effect relies on the deducting ratiocination in the “ostensive-inferential process; and whether the deducting ratiocination is successful depends on achieving the optional relevance between information and context. As we mentioned above, translation is a kind of communication. To get a better translation, the translator should try his best to achieve the optional relevance with less processing efforts. In the process of metaphor translation in the poem from Chinese into English, as the English readers and the Chinese reader have the same cognitive environment of the two images“雪肤”and“花貌”, the method of retaining the same image is adopted. Therefore, the English receptors can achieve the comprehension of the metaphor completely without any extra processing effort, that is to say, this translation successfully realizes the best contextual effect of the poem, which indicates the translation is a success.


5.0 Conclusion


Relevance theory provides adequate theoretical explanation for metaphor translation especially translatability of metaphor and translation model. Thus we could see the task of translator from a relevance-theoretic perspective: When translating the original text, translators try to improve their own cognitive competence to satisfy the ideal standard proposed by the author. After the translators finished understanding of the original text, they ought to think about how to adapt proper translation strategy to create a context which contains optimal relevance.
