e of the individual. Egoism is regarded as selfishness. The opinions of others are of great significance for an individual in thinking and his opinion. Chinese people tend to maximize similarities and minimize differences to achieve harmonious relationship with one another. Confucian idea of “constraining oneself to make a return to virtues” is still the prevailing thinking in interpersonal relationship in China. So under the Chinese culture’s influence, it is not strange to see what we Chinese think and do. And as I have mentioned before, language is a part of thought, it’s just a kind of expressing tool of culture, so culture’s mistakes instead of language mistakes must contribute on the communicative failure, thus for our students, if they want to be bilingual, they must at first be bicultural. And for our teachers, to teach language also needs to teach culture. That is just what W. Rivers says: Foreign language teaching plays two important roles, one is instrumental motivation, the other is integrative motivation. The former means that students should grasp and use some kind of procedure to learn a foreign language according to their understandings, and by doing exercises to memorize what they’ve learned. And the goal of foreign language learning is to put the language in the service of a special purpose, like translating literature works, reading documents, our daily communication, etc. The latter (integrative motivation) means that foreign language teaching can improve the students’ cognition and verbal action, it can also help the students to develop a kind of new culture awareness. Continue, let’s come to the investigation once again:
(1) How much do you know about the culture gaps between East and West?
(A) A lot 8.3% (B) Little 8.1% (C) A little 71.3%
(D) No means to know 1.9% (E) No choice 4%
(2) In your opinion, the insufficiency o f foreign language teaching lies in ------------?
(A) Test-centered teaching model 33.5%
(B) Insufficiency in caring out listening and talking exercises 53.6%
(C) What we learned is useless 12.19%
(D) Ignore to develop communicative. Comprehension 26%
(3) Which aspect is the one you are anxious to learn in classroom?
(A) Communication and interchange 77.3%
(B) Translation 5.1%
(C) Grammar 0.9%
(D) Test skills 5.1%
(E) The ability to receive information 10.4%
(4) Do you think the teaching method does well to your later applied English?
(A) Yes 12% (B) No 15.3% (C) Only “know”, can’t “use” 70.9%
So it’s clear enough to notice the conflation between teaching and learning. Because our students don’t have the chance to understand, to feel and to experience culture through language teaching method, there is no way for them to develop a kind of new culture awareness, so how natural it is for them to feel unconfident and keep complaining their poor English?
Part Three
English teaching and learning has long existed in China, so it’s high time for us to step up to a higher ladder. As a would-be English teacher, I feel the strong responsibility that I can’t wriggle out of. Having done some study on English teaching, I found out that culture aspects are greatly contained in words, grammar, idioms and phrases, so I asked myself: Why not to prescribe for it? The following is the prescribe note, which goes on like this:
A), Use traditional teacher-centered teaching model:
A1), Word’s teaching: word is the basic elementary
