y more attention to the relations between language and culture and improve our language communicative ability.
A2) Text’s teaching:
A21) Add culture background as a supplementary to the text.
In “Holidays and Special Days” (Unit 4 of New College English), we are obliged to explain the most important information about the holidays and special days-Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, V alentine’s Day, etc. About the date, the source or the legend of this the special day and the traditional celebration. This is the first part of teaching. The next job is to reveal the related information on the holidays. When it comes to Christmas, it’s a great chance to expose a beautiful picture about Christmas before our students: the Bible, the Birth of Jesus Christ, and the appearance of Santa Claus, the Christmas tree, the Christmas dinner, the Christmas gifts, the Christmas carols and so forth.
A22), Do the summery of the culture aspects in the texts
In “Bridging culture Gaps gracefully” (Unit 3 of New College English), having finished reading it, we can summarize the culture aspects in this way:
a), Dining customs: Americans feel that the first role of being a polite guest is to be on time, when the guest cannot come on time, he calls his host or hostess on the telephone, gives the reason, and tell at what time he can come.
b), Body space:
*American individualists value privacy and always maintain a distance of 45-80 centimeters between them.
*In American culture, frequent, prolonged bodily contact between males suggests homosexuality.
c), Body language:
*American makes the “OK” gesture with his thumb and forefinger, yet the gesture has an insulting meaning in France and Belgium: “You are worth zero”, while in Greece and Turkey it is an insulting or vulgar sexual invitation.
*Americans may pat other adult on the head to show sympathy, affection or encouragement. This behavior could insult Chinese.
*Americans point to their chest to signify “me”, but think it is funny when Chinese point to their nose.
d),Taboos:
*Don’t give four of anything to a Japanese or Korean, it is the “bad luck” number like the number 13 in many cultures including the United States and England,
*Flowers carry all symbolism: purple flowers are the flower of death in Mexico and Brazil; the same with white flowers in Japan, and why chrysanthemums are the flower of death in many European countries.
A3), Grammar teaching:
I usually need to take a deep breath after I have read a run-on sentence in my students’ writing. The main cause for their run-on sentences is that they were not aware of the differences between the structure system of Chinese and that of English. The former values “expressing meaning”, paying less attention to the word’s form, word’s turn, and no particular rules to govern the sentence-making. The latter one lists verbs as the most important part, verb-oriented sentence gives its meaning by change the tense of the verb and building relationship with other conj, prep and pron. So each word takes its own seat, let’s compare:
a),今天星期六。 It is Saturday!
b),散会了,我们回家吧! Let’s go home as the meeting is over.
c),他喜欢住在有山有水的地方。 He wants to live in a place where there are mountain and lakes.
B) Use student-oriented teaching model
“Interest is the best teacher”; students can expand their knowledge by reading English novels, magazines or literature works. A good book contains much educational factors, by reading it; you can
