rnment paid the Mexican government 15 million dollars, and California and New Mexico were ceded to America. The war expanded the territory of the United States to the Pacific Coast.
The United States government got large block of land from England and Russia through the methods of paying money and launching war. At last the United States expanded its territory from the coast of Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
The process of America’s territorial expansion is the process of exploring the west. In the mid 18th century, the purchase of Louisiana and annexation of Texas led to a large scale westward movement. Countless people from Europe and Asia rushed to the west dreaming of being wealthy. More black slaves were sent to America. The discovery of gold mine pushed the immigration to the peak. Everybody went to the west with the golden dream.
With the expansion of the territory and Westward Movement, there arose a new generation of young people who were more acquisitive, or aggressive.
Most of the early immigrants—those who immigrated into America before 1860─ experienced frontiersmen’s life. This contributed to the formation of American character.
In the unfamiliar, strange and difficult circumstances, the frontiersmen had to take a risk and be brave, optimistic and must have strong will.

These immigrants joined together and created American culture which was a blending of European cultures under new circumstances in the New World.
In the United States, Christian culture is the mainstream of American culture. All the nations of immigrants must live and develop upon such environment.
American culture was not a mere reproduction of European cultures. Americans took the advantages and eliminated the disadvantages. Hard conditions in the colonies forced them to give up part of what they had been familiar in the Old World and adapted themselves to the new environment. They became less formal but more pragmatic, less conservative and more outspoken and so on.
The majority of Americans are white people who account for about 78% of the total US population. The white people are immigrants of descendants from European nations. In the United States, the white people are the mainstream. American culture is on the basis of Christianity, Greek and Roman culture.[3](P32) The language and the traditions of the Anglos are the main custom and behavior standard. The white people are the dominant class or upper class. Most of them are in high social position.
Most of the early immigrants were from Britain. They were known as the White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. Most of them were Christians. They played a dominant role in the process of laying the foundations of American culture.[3](P32) They migrated to America to pursue freedom. So pursuit of freedom and equality
