Introduction
Making employees devote to the process of achieving organizational goals is one of the major responsibility of corporate managers at all levels. Studies have shown that the more employees are dedicated, the more innovative a company is, the higher productivity it will have and the better its profitability will be (Shuck and Wollard, 2010). However, there are many companies which have poor performance in strengthening employee engagement. How to improve employee engagement becomes an important task that human resource (HR) personnel face (Shuck, 2011). Currently, the importance of human resource management (HRM) in organizational development process is increasing and gradually crossing the boundaries of HR department, becoming the responsibility shared by managers at all levels within an organization. Especially for line managers those who bear important responsibility, line managers are playing an increasingly important role in the implementation and enforcement of HRM policies and systems (Watson and Maxwell, 2007). Therefore, it was suggested that line managers are essential for employee engagement. In this essay, it takes line managers in hospitality industry as research object, first of all, it analyzes the rationality of the concept that "The line manager is essentially responsible for employee engagement", then it carries out a critical analysis towards this view to finally bring out its own views.
Engagement and motivation
Shuck (2011) defines employee engagement as a work-related, positive emotion and cognitive state which is full of a sense of accomplishment and perfection and has the characteristics of energy, dedication and dedicated features. Employee engagement is highly related to work motivation (Shuck and Herd, 2012). Early motivation theories consider that human work motivation is economic interests, workers are most concerned about their own material benefits, based on this, the theories promote the implementation of highly irritating, distinguishable piecework wage system (Stecher and Rosse, 2007). They believe that an effective tool that can stimulate employee engagement is money. Limitations of early motivation theories lie in that they treat man as a form of capital, motivating employees just with material can not effectively improve employee engagement. enterprises should more understand and meet the internal needs of employees in order to better motivate employees to improve engagement, content-based incentive theory is better to make up for these deficiencies (Udechukwu, 2009).
