2.0 Introduction

Fast development of modern technology makes the whole world into a free market without boundaries in the 21st century. The workforce develops according to the trend of diversity. Workers in different ages, sexes, colors, races, religions, values, abilities, skills, etc. are employed in one corporation. The diversity of workforce brings new challenges to the management of the corporation. Therefore, the human resource management with specialized strategic importance should be applicable to the development trend of workforce diversity through adjustment and reposition to achieve competitive advantages for the corporation. IBM is a quintessential example that can be cited for helping deal with the current management issues in the corporations with diverse workforce. IBM makes efforts to understand the cultures, requirements and values of the workers so as to improve competitive advantages of human resource for enhancing its attraction, and the implementation of workforce diversity management allows IBM to fully respect and value the diverse workforce and explore the development on the basis of maintaining the stability of the corporation.


3.0 Development Course of Workforce Diversity Management in IBM

3.1 Background of IBM
IBM is an American multinational technology corporation, and it has branches all over the world ranging from Asia to Europe. In 1911, IBM was founded as CTR, and IBM was not adopted as the current name until 1924. IBM plays an extremely important role in the history of modern computer because it is the inventor of countless computer-related inventions. IBM speeds up the development of the information technology, and people are still enjoying the benefits brought by IBM in the last few decades.
3.2 Reasons of Implementing Workforce Diversity Management
With the development of society, the number of female workers is nearly the same as that of the male workers. Even in 2000, the proportion of female workers and male workers was 1:1 in the United States and 2:3 in the United Kingdom. At the same time, the United States is a country comprising white people and colored people, and more than 1/3 of the population is colored people. In addition, people are in different marital conditions, ages, religions, life styles, etc. When the branches of IBM had not grown all over the world, the challenge of diverse workforce management was brought to it.
In 1953, workforce diversity management was treated as one of the mission statements in IBM. When IBM is developed into the multinational technology corporation, workforce diversity management becomes increasing important. IBM has the diversity management principle that all employees are respected and fairly treated regardless of race, gender, pregnancy, culture, religion, age, nationality, disability, or sexual orientation (Frank, 2009).
