nd Levinson believed face was composed of two basic and universal desires: positive face and negative face. In their 1987 book, they defined positive face in two ways: as "the want of every member that his wants be desirable to at least some others" and "the positive consistent self-image or personality (crucially including the desire that this self-image be appreciated and approved of) claimed by interactants "(Brown. P.&S. Levinson,1987:05). Negative face was defined as "the want of every 'competent adult member' that his actions be unimpeded by others", or "the basic claim to territories, personal preserves, rights to non-distraction--i.e. the freedom of action and freedom from imposition"(Brown. P.&S. Levinson,1987:05). Ten years after, Brown defined positive face as one’s desires to be liked, admired, appreciated and respected. Negative face was the desire of not to be imposed upon, and not to be interfered and to be deprived of the freedom of behave. It is clear that “positive face refers to one's self-esteem, while negative face refers to one's freedom to act”. (Foley, William, 1997:32) Positive face and negative face are the basic wants in any social communication, and so during any social communication, cooperation and politeness are needed among the participants to maintain each others' faces.
According to Brown and Levinson’s theory on “face threatening acts”, they believe that a person's face often encounters all kinds of threats in social communication and people need to save each other's face in communication. In fact, in daily communication people’s social behaviors inevitably threaten each other's face because of various reasons. In order to solve this problem, Brown and Levinson use politeness strategies.
2.2 Politeness Theory
Politeness theory is the theory that accounts for the redressing of the affronts to face posed by face-threatening acts to addressees. (Foley, William, 1997:35)It is one of aspects of the theory on politeness formulated by Brown and Levinson. In communication, politeness is the expression of the speakers’ intention to mitigate face threats caused by certain face threatening acts toward other people. Another definition is "a battery of social skills whose goal is to ensure everyone feels affirmed in a social interaction". (Foley, William, 1997:36) Being polite therefore consists of attempting to save face for another. Brown and Levinson believed politeness also included positive politeness and negative politeness. Positive politeness strategies try to minimize the threats to the hearer’s positive face. They are used to make the hearers feel good about themselves, their interests or possessions, and are most usually used in situations where people know each other fairly well. In addition to hedging and attempts to avoid conflict, some strategies of positive politeness include statements of friendship, solidarity and compliments. Negative politeness strategies aim at the hearers’ negative face and emphasize avoidance of imposition on the hearers. These strategies presume that the speaker will be imposing on the listener and there is a higher potential for awkwardness or embarrassment than positive politeness strategies.
