r effect on English learners in recent years. But, as foreign language learners, Chinese students still have no strong cross-cultural awareness in communication. Different countries have different customs and taboo. Euphemism is the most proper way to avoid embarrassment and offensive behaviors in cross-cultural communication. If a teacher can use euphemisms properly in English class, this kind of accumulated knowledge about euphemisms can cultivate student’s cross-cultural awareness in daily communication. As a result, English class can not only improve students’ general knowledge on western countries, but also make preparation for students’ further education abroad in the future.
4. Aspects in which Euphemism should be used
English class is an active platform on which teachers and students communicate with each other. Therefore, whether the students and teachers communicate with each other harmoniously and successfully will influence the quality of teaching directly. As we know euphemism is the lubricant of communication, so it is the best choice to achieve this aim. According to Brown and Levinson’s face theory and politeness, in order to make the communication continue fluently, everyone tries to save face not only for self but also for the other and should try to behave politely. If so, high quality class atmosphere will be created and students also will have great confidence to learn. All of this contributes to the successful achievements of the teaching goals. In order to achieve this effect, teachers need to use euphemisms in the following four aspects.
4.1 Conveying Greetings
In China, our Chinese tradition always advocate respecting the old and teachers, so when the younger and students meet their elders and teachers anywhere, greets are indispensable. In fact, no matter the old or the younger, students or teachers, everyone should respect each other irrespective of position, age and professions in our modern society. When it comes to students and teachers, greetings in the class is very important, especially in English class. A formal English class usually begins with mutual greetings between teachers and students. Teachers and students not only need to use greetings, but also need to use appropriately and politely. Before entering the teaching content, teachers always tend to use some words to attract students and direct them into the class. These words are not employed randomly, but are selected and designed carefully. For instance, on the morning of Monday, students say “Good morning, teacher.” After saying ‘Good morning, everyone’ Teachers may say “Did you have a wonderful time in your weekends?” instead “Why you are not in the mood?” The former is more positive and can attract students’ attention and make them answer the question positively. This can pave the way for teachers’ following teaching. But the latter is negative in the starting point and it is easy to make students immerse into the depressing feelings and may lead to the whole class is disinteresting. So using euphemisms to convey greetings plays an important role in the success of the whole class.
4.2 Giving Directions
In Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, words which can give directions are a particular kind of speech act which causes the hearer to take a particular actio
