摘要:委婉语是一种人类为了避免打扰他人而使用的较为礼貌或者愉快的避讳别人的一种方式,几乎所有的文化中都有一些概念或事物应当避免直接提及的,即使他们的语言就是这样一个词,这就需要用委婉语来表达。中国有着丰富悠久的文化传统,因此在中国使用委婉语的情况更加的普遍。除了日常交流意外,委婉语更广泛的运用在政治、经济和人类生活的方方面面,特别是在教育方面。

One of the most important roles euphemisms play is to produce psychological purpose to the participants involved in communication. According to Face Theory, every person in society has a face want including students whose face wants are even greater and stronger than any other person as a result of immaturity, sensitiveness and even frailty sometimes. Being at a key stage of life, students are eager to get understood and appreciated by adults, especially by their parents and teachers. Moreover, because they are not mature enough both in mentality and physiology, it’s common for them to make some mistakes in their lives and studies. These mistakes, if not dealt with properly, may turn to be serious ones. It’s teachers’ obligation to help them find out their deficiencies and correct them. But on most occasions, to the students, what matters is not what the teacher says, but how a teacher says. Even if the students know they make mistakes, because of the immatureness and saving face, they are eager to be understood and forgave by their teachers. Under these circumstances, teachers not only need to point out their mistakes, but also choose a proper way to meet their psychological needs. At this moment, euphemisms always show their great power which can make the word or expression more polite and pleasant to avoid upsetting students. Language is so magic that almost at any time one idea you want to express always has various ways to be achieved. For instance, a student fails in his examination. To the student himself, maybe he is in low spirits and feels that he loses his face. Under this occasion, if his teacher talks with him directly and denies his psychological needs, the student may be hurt and lose confidence to study. On the contrary, if the teacher can pay more attention to the ways he uses and can adopt appropriate euphemisms to point out student’s deficiencies as well as encourage student to make progress in the latter study, the student may correct and do his best in the next exam.
3.2 To stimulate cultural and cross-cultural awareness of students
Just as mentioned above, students are a particular group because of their age, immaturity, sensitiveness and frailty. Besides, students are the future of our country, their major right and obligation is study. A good student must have a good knowledge of culture of his country. In order to learn cultural knowledge, textbook is one way but not the only way. Usually, a best way to learn culture is to immerse yourself in it. Even though Chinese students grow up in the Chinese culture, but many students take it for granted and have little cultural awareness. China is a big country and has fifty-five majorities except Han. Students from different majorities may bring different cultures and customs. If English teachers do not pay attention to words they use, some words may be offensive to students who come from different majorities. For instance, if a teacher always refers to pig even how to eat pork before the students who are from the Hui, this behavior is great contempt and affront to them. At the same time, if the teacher uses proper words according to cultural differences and various customs, students may be influenced and cultivate a kind of culture awareness as time goes by.
