5. How to apply euphemisms in English class
In English class, in order to avoid embarrassment and harm on students, teachers need to apply euphemisms appropriately. Different students may have different characters. This leads to the different teaching ways and different talking ways a teacher needs to adopt. If the student is easygoing and doesn’t care about details, the offensive way of speaking a teacher uses may not have side effect on him. On the contrary, every word teacher says will have great effect on a student who is introverted and sensitive. Therefore, the application of euphemisms plays a significant role in English class. To a certain extent, it is not easy to use euphemisms appropriately during the teaching, so studies on this area are urgently needed. According to the face theory, politeness theory and the formation of euphemisms, teachers can adopt euphemisms through the following three ways.
5.1 phonetic ways
Phonetic ways to express euphemism can avoid the appearance of some items and voice which is offensive to students. Phonetic ways, as common ways to express euphemism mainly have the following four aspects: First, using low tones statement in which the voice often falls at the end of a statement. The falling tones can express ideas euphemistically and can achieve the purpose of reassuring. For instance, if a teacher says to his students“‵That’s not bad”, he may be encouraging his students not to lose confidence in themselves. Second, using low tones or falling tones imperative sentences which can express request and euphemism politely. For instance, if a teacher wants one of his students to close the door in the classroom, he can say “Close the door ”directly but had better use the falling tones which can show respect to his student. Third, using rising tones to express request which also can achieve the communication purpose politely. Fourth, using a soft voice to express euphemism is a good choice. It can create a kind of warm and pleasant atmosphere which contributes to the harmonious relationship between teacher and students.
5.2 grammatical ways
5.2.1Tense
In English, tense can lend a little euphemistic color to the expressions for something undesired. Especially when people use want, hope, think and wonder or words like that they may also make use of the tense to sound more euphemistically. For example, if a teacher wants to use his student’s dictionary in class, he may say ‘Lend it to me!’ But this is very offensive to student. If he says ‘I wondered if you would mind lending it to me?’ In this way, student may feel he has his own self-esteem and was respected by his teacher.
5.2.2 Syntactical negation
This method can lessen the painful impact of the language that is not welcomed. We say she is not pretty, actually she is very ugly, but the former is more acceptable. Because the words “not pretty” does not equal to “ugly”, they could be “plain” too. Not pretty has a wider range of meaning than ugly. Similar usages in English class are as the following: I don’t think, I am afraid, I am not sure etc. For example, when a student makes mistakes in his homework, a teacher may say “you shouldn’t do like this, it’s wrong!” this will lead to his student fearing him and even copy
