, horror movies can make people reflect and can even directly help to bring about the improvement of some social problems. Therefore, horror movies are not only entertainment, but also useful in the socio-cultural aspect. However, horror movies’ unique “anti-cultural stance”, dark and despair themes, their close relation with taboo subjects like violence and sex, and their direct and brutal form presentation make them easier to be disliked and even abused than other types of movies.

The cultural traditions of mystery are more long-standing and profound in the oriental countries than in the western countries. The fundamental differences between Chinese and Western cultures are as follows. While it is a tangible universe in the west, it is a universe of intangible in China and while substance and vacuity confront each other in the west, they beget each other in China. Ghosts are the main theme of oriental horror films, revealing the unique mysterious atmosphere of the oriental culture. The above are the cultural contexts of the oriental horror films. Meanwhile, Orientals love to fill and extend the unknown field with their imagination, which is by no means lack of romance and tender feelings. Comparing with the visional bloody western horror films, the Oriental horror films focus on the creation of the atmosphere and characterization of ghosts in a calm, forlorn and spiritual style. Different countries raise different people. The different contents and styles of horror films in different countries and regions, in fact, are mirrors of different cultural heritage and national psychology. Thus, in this dissertation it firstly sorts out the history of Chinese horror films, and then carries out a study of its narrative strategies, narrative styles, and communicative features, taking the classic Chinese horror films as the subject of the cultural connotation research. It is hoped that this will be a more comprehensive study of the creation and development of horror films in China and will be useful to the future research.
