In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its official Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorder (Isay).
Since then, homosexuals were no more considered as a result of mental or physical illness, but one of the behaviors of human beings. People were more likely to talk about homosexuality or gay marriage, and most of them finally changed their old theory of homosexual. Not until today, people stopped judging if one was homosexual based on the matter of his or her manner, clothing and actions. A eighty-year old woman remembered she saw a man in the late 1940s “held his cigarette a certain way, wore a little makeup, and dressed impeccably” (Marcus), and she immediately assumed that he was a homosexual. Compare to today, people could not tell who is homosexual by simply looking at their outlooks and actions because homosexuals behave just as same as the heterosexuals. Thus people had more interest in learning about homosexuality, and they had the willing to gain information and the courage to talk about homosexuality. Therefore, unlike the people lived before the 70’s, nowadays many homosexuals have publicly acknowledged to their friends and family that they have special sex orientations (Marcus). Meanwhile, the population of homosexuals increased rapidly. Many people grew up before the 70s surprised at the number of homosexual’s people have today. “Now you see gay people on the television, read about them on the newspaper, and they have parade. Where did they all come from?” That is the surprise from the eighty-year old woman (Marcus). The large population leads many homosexuals to speak out publicly about the civil rights of gays and lesbians; they believe their sexual orientations are inborn and unchangeable; since their sexual orientations are unchangeable, therefore they want marriages too. Nevertheless, although homosexuality is argued to be genetic, and although homosexuality is removed from the list of mental illness, it is not an innate behavior, and in this recent decade, homosexuality in some cases should be reconsidered as a mental illness.
