摘要:As a novel that describes the black experience in America and the human struggle for individuality and identity, Invisible Man stays sixteen weeks on the best-seller list. Some critics claim that it is the most important American novel that appeared after World War II.

can in the south teaches him to carry out his actions carefully. During college years, he blindly believes that the ideology of the white is right, which is imposed on him by the faculty and family. Soon he is expelled from the college; however, he falls into the same situation: he is offered a desirable job at the Brotherhood. He believes the ideology of the Brotherhood and speaks their mind to people. During the dispute between him and the organization, he is told that he is hired to speak not to think. At this time, he realizes that he has been dedicating to others’ believes lifelong. When he escapes and gets trapped in a manhole, he burns his files. He destroys these things that represent his identity. He ponders independently over his true self. Shedding his blindness, he struggles to arrive at a conception of his identity that honors his complexity as an individual without sacrificing social responsibility.

II.       Fluid Themes—Searching For Identity

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison is a novel which embodies the universal theme of self-discovery, of the search to figure out who one truly is in life which we all are embarked upon. Throughout the text, the protagonist is constantly wondering about who he really is, and evaluating the different identities which he assumes for himself. He progresses from being a hopeful student with a bright future to being just another poor black laborer in New Your City to being a fairly well off spokesperson for a powerful political group, and ultimately to being the “invisible man” which he eventually realizes that he has always been. To some extent, Invisible Man is a bildungsroman (a type of novel that chronicles a character’s moral and psychological growth). The narrative and thematic concerns of the story revolve around the development of the protagonist as an individual. Throughout the book, the protagonist moves from innocence to experience, from repression to expression. Only through a long and arduous journey of self-discovery which is fraught with constant and unexpected tragedy and loss does he realize the truth that his perceptions of himself and of how others perceived him had been prevented him from going forward. As the protagonist in the novel, the narrator represents the whole American black, who suffers from the psychological discrimination from the white, loses and searches for identity as well as their cultural identity in the white-dominated society. Black cultural identity is composed by the thousand American blacks, and for the American black, they can only find their identities in the black culture. Only through finding their own roots, their cultural tradition, can the American blacks get the power that can compare with the white, thus achieving their spiritual rebirth and finding their authentic identities. The narrator in the novel doesn’t find his identity until he completely accepts his black culture.

2.1 The First Phase—Ignorance

The American black, as the product of American specific history and culture, is a minority as well as an outsider in the American society. Slavery, racial segregation, racial discrimination and social injustice left scars and pains in Afro-Americans’ memory. Afro-Americans have resisted to their destiny for a long time. The double identity of both an American and a Negro makes the two irreconcilable pursuits and ideo论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
