摘要:As a novel that describes the black experience in America and the human struggle for individuality and identity, Invisible Man stays sixteen weeks on the best-seller list. Some critics claim that it is the most important American novel that appeared after World War II.

logies exist in one black body.

Born in a poor black family in the Southern states, which has suffered the slavery for a long time, the protagonist has strong servility, which was inherited from his ancestors. He is humble and meek before the white. In his mind, the black is inferior to the white, who is still their master and the only man who judges their abilities. He is ashamed of being the descendent of slaves and his poor living conditions, and attempts to break away from these plights by uplifting himself. For example, the black president of his college Bledsoe is his idol and he always wants to be successful as Bledsoe. In order to achieve his success, he studies diligently and is very careful about his manners and attitudes towards the authoritative people. In this way, he forms the humble and submissive character. Gradually, this humility and submissiveness become rooted in his mind. But at that time the protagonist does not realize that he is suffered from the spiritual discrimination from the white. His ignorance prevents him from recognizing the truth behind others’ errant behavior and leads him try to fulfill their misguided expectations.

2.2 The Second Phase—Awakening

While the protagonist is trying to fulfill the misguided expectations, he confronts constant humiliation, disillusionment, frustration, and disappointment because he has not got enough strength and ability to fight against the dehumanizing power of the capitalist industrial society and the men who take advantage of him and deceive him for their own selfish ends. What is more, he has not established his own identity. During his life, the protagonist encounters several people of authority, people like Norton, Bledsoe, and the Brotherhood. Those people all impose a false name or an unsuitable identity upon him. When he attempts to live according to the dictates of others, he loses his autonomy and suffers from one betrayal after another. He discovers incidentally the self existence is full if sense of confusion, nothingness, anguish and loneliness. After experiencing each significant event, he always gives a speech that summarizes his state of development. In the succeeding recognitions he is more aware who he is and what his experience means. Spiritually shaken by the truth of racial discrimination, the protagonist begins to awaken gradually. Throughout the journey, there are many motifs that exert great influence on the protagonist. He realizes that as a marginal group in the US, Afro-Americans are not understood, not respected and are even invisible in the eyes of white. It is the spiritual discrimination that leads to Afro-Americans lose their identities and they can only find themselves and their values in the black culture.

The protagonist’s awakening has great importance for him. He begins to realize his status, and this is the first step for him to look for his self-identity. After the awakening, he is condemned to pursue his final freedom.

2.3 The Third Phase—Epiphany

After the protagonist awakens and realizes his status as a black man who is invisible in the white eyes, he begins to search for his authentic identity and his freedom in a white-dominated society. He no longer stands other people’s inability to see him for their racial prejudice. He starts to take action to resist the racial society because when he was an honest and obedient man nobody no论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
