ConclusionThe conceptual integration theory, also known as conceptual blending theory, isinitiated by Gilles Fauconnier. It is a kind of cognitive course when people carry on aconversation or an activity, especially a creative thought or activity. It is dynamic,supple, and active in the moment of thinking. (Fauconnier & Turner, 1998:25) Servinga variety of cognitive purposes, it can be also regarded as a general cognitiveoperation equivalent to analogy, mental modeling, framing, recursion and conceptualcategorization. The crucial notion “conceptual integration” is introduced in Mappingin Thought and Language. Fauconnier, the author of the book, explains the“four-space model” in which he points out that the on-line meaning of all naturallanguages can be constructed in the process of conversation or activity. With thefurther development of the theory, Fauconnier states that conceptual integration is abasic cognitive operation which uniformly operates at different levels of abstractionand under various contextual circumstances. Later he makes an explicit explanationabout the operational principles and working rules of the conceptual integration theory.It has been found that the theory has a mighty explanatory power on many cognitiveactivities. A new way of research has been provided by the theory to study variouslinguistic phenomena such as figures of speech. Therefore, metaphor, as a figure ofspeech, can be studied from a cognitive linguistic perspective.
