Ever since the20thcentury, there are many linguistic scholars and researchers have done a great dealof studies on hedges. The studies of interpersonal function also have reached a highdegree of sophistication. However, the studies of the combination of these twoelements receive less attention. The aim of this paper is to explore the interpersonalfunction of hedges and related phenomenon in English news commentary thisconcrete discourse, especially from the perspective of systemic-functional grammar.In this chapter, the relevant content will be introduced gradually to my topic.

1.1 Background Information

There is a widely common belief that the language used in news commentaryshould be objective, informational and explicit, and it is designed to deal with thefacts directly and to search for the independent truth. However, as a matter of fact,like any other kinds of discourse, effective news commentary is a natural languageuse, it is interactive.In natural language, the concept which a word expresses does not have a cleardenotation. ―Most of the classes encountered in the real world are fuzzy, some onlyslightly and some markedly so (L.A Zadeh, 1972). Linguists called this concept―fuzzy concept. In the fact, Zadeh firstly introduced the term ―fuzzy in 1965 in hisarticle Fuzzy Set on Information and Control, and he attuned the fact that naturallanguage concepts have vague boundaries and fuzzy edges and that, consequently, theentities in the real world have unsharp defined boundaries.
As language researchers pay more and more attention to this phenomenon, a newdiscipline —— fuzzy linguistics, emerged in the 1970s. It seems that fuzziness is acommon character of natural language. While at the same time, the ―hedges, whichare closely related to language fuzziness phenomenon, became one of the mainresearch subjects naturally. Although hedges might be around nearly as long aslanguage itself, it was only in 1966 that they became the topic of linguisticinvestigation. Weinreich examined their use, but called them metalinguistic operators.It didn‘t take until 1972 that they were called hedges, when George Lakoff first usedthe term (cf Lakoff (1972)).To him, hedges denoted some lexical expressions thatwere used to shift the borderlines within the prototype theory of Rosch (1973). Lakoffstated that the borders of natural language concepts are not clear-cut but fuzzy.Zadeh and Lakoff have made fundamental contribution to the early study anddevelopment of hedges and its origin. After these, various researches had been doneon the subject about hedges. New approaches widened the scope to become mainlyinterested in the use of hedges in discourse analysis. Within these, the use of hedgesfor mitigation, vagueness and politeness were discovered in the early eighties.
