1.2 Significance of the thesis论文意义

Public sign, as an irreplaceable part ofcommunication, is a necessary step to boost the process of integration with the outside world.On the other side，the signs translation is still a mess in these facets of mistaking grammar,misspelling, lack of consistency, non-standardized expressions and so on. These problematictranslations have greatly tarnished the image of China. So it is high time to bring thesystematic and standard C-E translation of public signs.For another thing，memetics as a newly-bom theory has caught a lot of attentions from alot of scholars from the theoretical aspect. The emerging theory takes “meme，，as the coreconcept，which was coined by British Zoologist Richard Dawkins in his famous book TheSelfish Gene, It is an evolution theory in culture, which stands as a unit of culturaltransmission and a unit of imitation. However, memetics in China is still a fresh theory to beexpanded widely and deeply.From the memetic view, language is a kind of memes. As a refined form of language,public signs can be seen as a kind of memes to transmit as well. Based on the two facets, thethesis will apply this emerging memetic theory with the hope to provide a new way to studythe C-E translation of public signs.

1.3 Organization of the Thesis
In the thesis，the memetic theory will be employed to do the research on C-E translationof public signs. It not only contains the systematic introduction to memetics and public signs,but also takes particular examples to make the paper evident and reasonable. In this thesis,quite lots of signs examples are mainly collected from public places in different cities,newspapers and websites as well, such as transportations, scenic spots, shopping malls, and soon. Furthermore, based on memetic theory，this thesis will launch some strategies to translatepublic signs. This thesis is composed of six chapters.Chapter One is a general introduction to the whole thesis, including research background，significance and organization of the thesis.Chapter Two serves as the literature review, covering an international and domesticreview on memetic development, and a view on the current situation of public signs.Chapter Three is the theoretical framework for the further discussion in later chapters.
