Modern neurological researches have shown that human’s short-term memory isbased on bioelectrical loops of neurons inside our hippocampus. The coding processof short-term memory is mainly acoustic, and sometimes our visual coding systemassists in this process, for example when we draw a “mental map” to remember asmuch information as possible. The three systems in memory mechanism -- sensory memory, working memoryand long-term memory are all involved in interpreting. In SI, sensory memory andworking memory are responsible for listening, analysis and storage of information;and long-term memory is responsible for the language proficiency of the interpreterand preparation of interpretation. Therefore, improving memory capacity remains oneof the most important skills of interpreters.

Chapter 5. Suggested Training Strategies
Having established that memory is a significant part in the preparation andpractice of SI, and discussed the memory mechanisms, we could try to come up with aplan for interpreters to improve memory skills. The three systems all have influenceon the effects of interpretation, and they require different training strategies. Thispaper mainly deals with the training of working memory (short-term memory) andlong-term memory.
5.1 Training Strategies for Working Memory
In psychology, the major difference between working memory and short-termmemory lies in that short-term memory focuses only on the storage of information, whereas working memory emphasizes the storage and processing of information. Asis stated above, working memory is divided into three components: the centralexecutive system, phonological loop (PL), and visual-spatial sketchpad. And ininterpretation, phonological loop is the most important. It means when we hear someinformation, we repeat that information inside the loop to prevent its decay.
