6.1 Limitation of This Research

Although this research has come to a general conclusion that working memoryand simultaneous interpretation are relevant. However, due to limitation of myknowledge and other factors, there are certain limitations of this research.1) The subjects are not professional simultaneous interpreters, but second-yearinterpretation students. Their performances cannot fully represent that of professionalinterpreters.2) Some factors are not well controlled. Although the subjects are all second-yearinterpretation students who have received the same amount of SI training, they mightspend different time in practicing based on their personal arrangements and theirinterests in interpretation. Some of the subjects are beginning to undertake somegeneral interpretation work such as liaison interpreting and consecutive interpreting insmall occasions, whereas other do not have much experience in field interpretation.3) Working memory is a very complex concept, and it includes three majorcomponents: the central executive system, the phonological loop, and thevisual-spatial sketchpad. In this experiment, the subjects’ visual memory capacitiesare tested in the form of images, which might not be fully convincing in proving theircapacity of visual-spatial sketchpad. Similarly, the subjects’ acoustic memorycapacities are tested, but it may not be sufficient to prove their capacities inphonological loops. Furthermore, the experiment does not test the subjects’ centralexecutive system. In the current phase of interpretation study, most researches arecarried out using the black box method, because the methods to study the way humanbrains work are not common to ordinary researchers.4) The criteria according to which the subjects are scored may not be precise. Invisual memory test, the memory testing app scores the subjects automatically. In othertests, including acoustic memory test (retelling) and SI test, the scores are given bythe researcher, which may include some subjective factors, and the criteria may not bescientific enough.5) In acoustic memory test, we use retelling as the method, and the material is inEnglish. As the subjects’ first language is Chinese, their understanding of the materialmay impact their actual acoustic memory capacity. In addition, although they are inthe same grade, their language proficiencies may differ from one to another due topersonal practices and interests.6) 12 randomly-selected subjects are not very typical in interpretation study.They may not be exactly suitable to stand for the general level of interpretation.Furthermore, 12 subjects might not be enough for a research to draw a fullyconvincing conclusion.7) For limitation of realistic conditions, this research is mainly horizontal, but notvertical.
