Chapter 1. Introduction
Interpretation is a special language activity. The interpreter must completemultiple tasks within a short time, including listening and understanding, memory,information processing and producing. During this process, the memory of sourcelanguage is a very important part, which directly affects the following stages, andtherefore it determines to some extent the results of interpretation and theperformance of the interpreter. It is very important in achieving fidelity in the threecriteria put forward by Yan Fu. In interpretation training and preparation, theinterpreter must master sufficient language skills, background knowledge andprofessional knowledge so as to enhance the performance. The knowledge is stored inour long-term memory. Therefore, Memory training is a pivotal link in interpretationtraining.It is widely recognized that in consecutive interpreting, short-term memory isvery important, because the interpreter starts speaking after the speaker finishesseveral sentences or paragraphs. The discourse could last for several minutes, and theinterpreter must remember what information the speaker has just conveyed so as tofulfill the interpreting task well. Although consecutive interpreters use notes as areminder, their memory capacity still plays a significant part. By contrast, insimultaneous interpreting, the interpreter does not need to memorize large amount ofinformation, therefore the importance of memory mechanism used to be ignored.However, in simultaneous interpretation, memory is also important, especiallywhen complex sentences are included. Each language has a unique structure and aspecial way to organize sentences. Sometimes the structures and sentencesorganizations could be highly different. Word order difference exists in manylanguage combinations. English-Chinese is a good example. In some cases the wordorders in both languages are opposite to each other. Therefore, there would be anecessary time lag, because the interpreter has to wait for certain components of thesentences to start interpreting. For example, interpreters from German to Chineseneed to wait for the verb to start interpreting. With the development of cognitivepsychology and research on working memory, the functions of memory, especiallyworking memory, is no longer constrained to storing information. It is also involvedin the primary processing of information. According to the actual working process ofSI, the interpreter is under stress, especially from the outside. It is not easy for theinterpreter to keep his or her own pace of speaking, because the information flow inthe speech is unexpected, which is actually controlled by the speaker. Like in otherforms of interpreting, the interpreter is the primary receiver of information, and theaudiences are the final receiver. Complex sentences are often comprised of severaldifferent components, and in some cases the interpreter has to wait for certaincomponents to start interpreting (for instance, from German to other languages).The objects of this research are revealing whether working memory capacity andsimultaneous interpretation performances are relevant, what their correlation is, andhow we could benefit from the knowledge of this.In interpretation studies, empirical research is a method often used to study theworking process of interpreters, because we still know very little about how humanbrain works.
