摘要:本文是一篇英语翻译论文,记者面对的问题来自两个角度:汉英差异视角和文化负载表达视角。本文从汉英差异的角度出发,结合汉英两种语言的特点,在对两种语言进行比较的基础上,探讨了逻辑分析的障碍。记者主要在汉语要点的处理和英语衔接的呈现上遇到困难。本文从文化负载表达的角度出发,探讨了两种文化负载表达的解释难点:绝对文化空缺表达和部分文化空缺表达。在对前人研究的反思和感悟的基础上,笔者提出了解决问题的对策。

2.2 Problems with culture-loaded expressions

The second difficulty that the reporter was faced with during this interpreting project arosefrom cultural differences. It was mainly reflected in the interpretation of culture-loadedexpressions in this project. Culture-loaded words, often associated with culture vacancy,refer to the concept that the expressions of the source language with certain culturalinformation cannot find the equivalent expression with the same cultural content in thetarget language (张思洁 & 张柏然, 2001). Another kind of definition of culture-loadedwords is that “the source language word may express a concept which is totally unknownin the target culture” (Baker, 1992: 21). Although definitions vary among scholars (Aixelá,1996; Robinson, 2003), there are similarities that culture-loaded words refer to theconcepts or items that other cultures do not have the same ones.

The topic of the speaker’s keynote speech was the construction of folklore symbols inDongxiang catering, which naturally involved rich Chinese cultural concepts. In the periodof preparation, although the reporter had already learned and previewed the speech outlinethat she had received previously, she still did not have enough knowledge reserve to makeextra explanations in the process of interpreting. After the speech, the reporter receivedseveral questions about the culture-loaded words mentioned in the speech from the foreignaudience. It seemed that they did not receive the intended messages. This reflected thereporter’s failure. The interpreting of culture-loaded expressions was another big challengefor the reporter in this project.

Firstly, how to overcome the logical analysis problems arising from Chinese-Englishdifferences?

Chinese and English, belonging to different language families, have developed theirown language features in the evolution, influenced by geographical conditions, modes ofthinking and other factors (吴菽蓉, 2011). Interpreting, as a cross-language activity, caninevitably meet the problems concerning the differences between the source language andthe target language. For the reporter, an absolutely novice interpreter who took onsimultaneous interpreting for the first time, the simultaneity and instantaneity ofinterpreting mode, alongside with the features of impromptu speeches, imposed greatburdens on her. However, she has gained from the experience and self-reflectionsafterward.
