摘要:There are numerous studies and researches on improving college students’English writing abilities, however, there are more researches on the function offreewriting on the improvement of students’ English writing ability in foreign landthan in China.

Chapter One


1.1 The Background of the Study
With the accelerated development of economic globalization, the role of Englishin international communication has become increasingly prominent. To improve thecomprehensive English ability of the whole nation, especially that of thecontemporary college students of various levels of universities and colleges, hasbecome one of the effective ways to comply with the international trend and toenhance the national competitiveness. Among the four basic skills of Englishlanguage — listening, speaking, reading and writing, writing ranks the highest level.Writing is the feedback on the acquired information and the extraction of it; it is theembodiment of students’ written communicative competence; it is also the necessarybasic quality for college students to complete their major study smoothly, carry outtheir work successfully and take the edge in their future competitive work. Therefore,English writing and its teaching has gained more and more attention. Here in thisstudy, the author takes English majors as an example to study the problem existingamong the college students and thus probe into the solution.

1.2 The Purpose of the Study
There are numerous studies and researches on improving college students’English writing abilities, however, there are more researches on the function offreewriting on the improvement of students’ English writing ability in foreign landthan in China. In China, the study mainly focuses on the simple discussion on theimportance of freewriting. The teachers and researchers mostly consider it as a part ofafter-class exercise and few of them practice it in class. Therefore, theteacher-sponsored freewriting is scarcely ever involved in class teaching and usuallydiscussed from the theoretical perspective. The empirical research on the function ofteacher-sponsored freewriting on the improvement of students’ English writing abilityis rare, not to mention that of college students’ and English majors’. This study isinspired by the related studies on freewriting and intended to combine this teachingconcept of English speaking countries with the present English writing teaching andstudents’ learning situation in China, thus to explore whether the English writingability of English majors can be improved by integrating teacher-sponsoredfreewriting into English writing teaching.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Factors Affecting English Writing Ability
Among the basic abilities of English learners, writing ability is the basic andmost important one. The aim of English writing is to examine the writer’s languageproficiency, logical thinking and ability to organize ideas. In other words, thepurposes of English writing are to measure the writer’s linguistic competence,including grammar and lexical mastership, textual and pragmatic ability, and to checkthe appropriateness of language expression. Thus, it is rather a comprehensive skill,which not only requires a lot from the writer — the solid comprehensive knowledge,e.g. words, sentence structures, figures of speech, etc.; but also transformsrudimentary language and textual knowledge to effective ways of expression.
